I agree with LtDan. To hell with the algea question, there are people in the world starving to death and dying at war so lets talk about sex in the tub!!....the filter was doing it's job already...ok... ;D And I also agree with the washing away of bodily fluids comment.

So back to the real question....why was the water crystal clear and the filter full of green algae

Wild guess, but since the tub wasn't used for a while, Maybe water pooled on top of the filter lid.  stagnent water = algie growth?  The water in the tub has 03, circ pump and N2  and that remained clear but puddles of stagnant water along the lip, cup holder indents, and such would grow alegie?

Tell your friend to clean the lid (both sides) wipe down the underside of the cover, and since it's a used hot tub and he's concerned about cooties, I'd recomend a drain, swirl away, flush, refill, new filters.  Wipe down everything, behind the pillows, inside the filter well etc.

You were smart to get out of the 30 hardbody party.  ;)

I have two questions!

1.  If there are 30 something hard bodies does that make me a 40 something soft body? :-X
2.  Who was flying the plane? ;D

And one statement!
I agree with the washing away of body fluids statement plus the can't find a comfortable spot statement.

One more question;
Since there is an obvious desire to have sex in the hot tub, why haven't the manufacturers addressed this and designed a "sex spa"!  With super duper schluper scooper filtration and  triple DAIT "Daily Anointment In Tub" lubrication injectors!  Someone call the Deceptionist!

I'm going to guess that the last time they rinsed the filter they just let it sit damp until it dried and it dried like that, and they put it in anyway.

Ok... if you can't find a comfortable position or are having friction issues... you aren't doing it right.   :)  Actually I wonder if people who can't get comfortable don't have loungers?  The knee portion of the lounger works rather well (at least in an Envoy).... so does the corner seat and the bench seat accross from the lounger.

I would never have sex in someone else's hot tub... but my own is my own and I do what I want in there.  As I've mentioned before, my only concern is the bodily fluids that are created, but as long as that is taken care of in appropriate measures as to not contaminate the tub, its all good, better than good, actually.

1) Has N2 ever been proven to kill algae? If not, there's one culprit.
2) Does ozone kill algae? I know it breaks down many organic compounds, but in enough concentration to kill algae? And, if ozone does kill algae - how old is the tub? If it had an older ozonator that needed a new bulb, or a CD ozonator that was malfunctioning, then ozone wouln't kill anything.
3) Either way, chlorine would do it, but w/ no chemicals for months, algae could build up.
4) I had algae growing behind my spa pillows. If a growth like that got close enough to the water, it could migrate to the filter.

So, if nothing is killing the algae, the rest of the story makes sense. First of all, a filter would make a great surface for algae to grow on. Secondly, since the tub is still running, the pumps are pulling nutrient-rich water past the algae, which they love.

As to the clarity- water can be very dirty and still be clear. Water can be cloudy without anything being alive, and you can have stuff living in a tub that has clear water. For example, look at a dirty aquarium - lots of algae growing on the walls, but the water itself is clear- and the algae certainly isn't hurting the fish.
