Quick computer related question
« on: January 19, 2007, 08:20:53 am »
I am trying to plug a wired keyboard into my husband's laptop docking station...the connection on the keyboard is the purple covered half circle one ...that the docking station won't accept.
Is there a converter thingy to change that to a USB connection? If so what is it called?  If not, I am guessing I need a different keyboard..right? He wants to have his lap top connected to a larger LCD screen and use a regular keyboard...He doesn't like the laptop quiet keys when he has to to a lot of typing.. :-/
Thanks,

somethinig like this?

http://www.xpcgear.com/usb2ps2.html ?

There are a lot of USB converter plugs out there.  Perhaps Staples or Office Max might help.

Yes, thank you so much Drew.  I have a Staples close by, but my experience has been that they are universally clueless...sorry if I insulted anyone, but I have never found anyone in Staples to be helpful with any computer related questions.

Ask for a USB to PS/2 converter for your keyboard. (maybe have the keyboard in the car in case there is an issue).

As much as I hate the store...Best Buys has one too

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7334306&st=usb+ps2+converter&type=product&id=1118845445350

but $29.99 seems high...rip off. If you can wait a few days you might be better off on the net.  Type USB ps2 Converter in at amazon.com and you'll find a bunch for  ALOT less.  ;) like under $10/   :)

You can buy a new USB keyboard for that, as long as you don't want one of those ones that look like the bridge of the Enterprise.

Have you tried to buy a basic keyboard these days?  All I want in a keyboard is for it to input the same character I press into the CPU.  I don't want one that controls a 56CD changer, goes to my favorite webpage and walks the dog.

Every keyboard I've ever bought came with a couple of different adapters. My latest keyboard is a USB style and came with the PS2 adapter. You might want to look around and see if there are any adapters around your house that you may have saved "just in case".

I went to Radio Shack to see how much the PS2 adapter was and to also get 50 feet of Cat5e patch cable...The price was $49.99 for both items. I went to the first website that Drew listed and ordered them for $29.99!  I have tagged all those sites now for future purchases, thanks so much guys. I will have the stuff in 3 days...which is well worth the $20.00 difference! ;)

I buy from Newegg.com all the time.  They are up in L.A., and I'm in San Diego, so I often get the stuff the next day, all for the price of regular shipping.

A few years ago, I had to buy 30 hard drives for work.  2 of them didn't work (that ratio is about right for inexpensive hard drives, wherever you buy them) and getting an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) and returning them to Newegg was easy and hassle free.

Good prices, good service and fast shipping.

It's funny, I had never heard of Newegg until I received an email from them telling me that my Sony laptop had been shipped and they needed some confirmation information..
I looked them up and called to tell them about the bogus information that I had received. It turns out I wasn't the only one who got that email! I guess it was some sort of pfishing scam.   :-/

....never did get my lap top!
