Snowmobile Season Preview

Given the season will be starting in a couple of months, I thought I would share with you some snowmobile pictures from last year. These were taken from far northern NH (Pittsburg to be exact). Temps were -20 the first day, and -16 the second day. It's a beautiful country we live in!

Need a hot tub at our friends camp up there!  >:(

Beautiful snow!  I just sold my snowmobile.  We never get good snow around here anymore, and I don't have time to trailer up to northern Minnesota, where there is usually really great snow conditions.

You paid way too much for that snowmobile, the clothes your wearing, all the accessories, the trip to get out there etc...  What a waste.  You got SOLD! ;D

It's nice to see you post something with some positivity to it.  Beautiful pics.

I want to get in the spa business so I can surf the internet and use Photoshop all day long.

Where I live it does get cold in the winter. Just not THAT cold. Brrrrrrr. Our snowmobiles look like this:

Our snowmoblies look like that too, except for the skis in front and then there is the nasty tendency for them to sink in water that isn't frozen.

;D ;D ;D ;D Thanks, that's cute.... Though, now I will have to admit, there actually IS a use for a three seater.

Don't believe I have been in -20 weather ever. Nor do I ever hope to be!

Closest I came may have been one brisk January day on top of Haleakala. It was cold at the summit but even colder when I walked to the western edge of the slope. Temperature difference apparently created an updraft that was so strong I could barely stand against it. And the wind was so cold my camcorder batteries froze in about 30 seconds and died.

OK, maybe it wasn't -20 but it was COLD! And I was wearing my ski jacket.

And it was made even colder by being able to see the beach down below where I knew folks were already laying out in the sun soaking up the warmth of the sun.

@ -20.. The trees crack and pop, the snow squeaks, and the overall feel is just quiet.. The air is so dry it actually doesn't feel as cold as one would think.

Our friends had told us a story about how years ago, temps one weekend got very low at night, in the -30's, and they couldn't start the truck that morning.. It was so cold the oil had thickened up like molasses. They had to drain the oil out of the truck, heat it up on the stove, then put it back in the truck to get it started..

We've had a few days where the low temperature was -30F.  That's pretty darn cold.

People who parked outside that night that didn't have their car block heaters plugged in couldn't start them.  Took hours to get a tow truck out for jump starts.

Running synthetic oil in the winter is a good idea for those who have to park outside and don't have a plug in available.  Synthetics don't get as syrupy as regular oil when the mercury goes that low.
Another trick that people used was to put a container of lit charcoal under their oil pans for an hour or two.  This one always made me a bit nervous, but I never had to try it.

Thank god it rarely ever gets that cold around here.  More typical winter lows are -10 or -15; plenty cold enough.
