Northman is an engineer!

Vermonter (and Northman) are both incredibly intelligent individuals who both have excellent water care instructions!  Maybe that is why I combined their approaches!

Just my thoughts!  Personally, I use chlorine and have been really happy with it!
Oklahoma Vanguard owner-don't hold that against me

Wow, lots of good information here.  Bill, can you explain what the Vermonter's approach is about?  I don't quite follow this routine.  One of you spa chemestry experts could probably make some money writing a book titled "Spa Water Chemestry for Dummies".  I don't understand why there isn't an automated system available for modern spas? ???

Cal,

Your routine is fine, perfectly safe.  Bacteria need time to mulitply.  The Vermonter's approach is widely followed and he is a qualified water chemist.

... can you explain what the Vermonter's approach is about?

On Doc Spa's site -- rhtubs.com there is a FAQ section with a post by a member of that board "Vermonter" that outlines his recommendations for sanitizing with dichlor, and the rationale behind it.  It is similar to the approach I outlined above:  adding enough sanitizer (usually 1/2 to 1 tsp/user depending on tub size, pH and other factors) after getting out of the tub to raise levels to 3-5 ppm in order to kill any bacteria left behind, maintaining a measurable residual to ensure that the water stays safe until your next use.  Vermonter also addresses shock treatments.  Another board member "Northman" outlines a whole water care program along the lines of what Steve posted in this thread.
