What to do with an old Hot tub cover?
« on: September 22, 2008, 12:15:52 pm »
My new cover arrived today.  For those interested, I did go with RH.  My final choosing factor was being able to take a close look at one a friend bought.  I did go for double wrapping and reinforced seams and handles.

So what do you do with your old cover to dispose of it.  Do you take out the inserts and break them down into pieces small enough to be disposed of? What have you done.

Well.  I'm a saver.  So, I took the rigid foam out of the vinyl cover and actually disposed of the vinyl cover - well, maybe I still have some of it.

And I let the foam pieces dry out and you gotta let 'em dry out.  And actully found a use for them.  I bought a new boat lift for my boat and needed to get it from point A to B and the best way was to float it there - on the two pieces of foam.  It worked incredibly well.  So, before you tear it all apart - think how you could use it.  Had I not used it for that, I would have looked for somewhere that could use a little rigid foam insulation.

You can grind them up (wood chipper) and mix the foam into garden soil also.

We also have a couple of customers that cut the foam into squares, stock them and use the for archery practice.

 ;D

When I dispose of one for the customer, I do exactly what you described, Bill.
Remove inserts, break up, throw in dumpster.

Funny enough, I have given one to the nieghbor kid for archery practice - no more arrows in my yard.

I pile them in my parking lot until the pile is at least ten feet high. Then I load them onto the truck using our forklift, and take them to the landfill. Cost is $22 for up to one ton, but I have never had a pile of covers go over one ton.

Oh - I did read somewhere - here I think, that one dealer contacted an archery club who came and gladly took all he had. I guess they are much easier to move around than hay bales, and they do get lighter with age once they get away from the hot tub.

Here if you cut it in half, or quarters, the trash service will usually pick it up...

This sounds to good to be true? Can you do this?

I have a chipper and a bow.......so yes, I can do it.
If you can't sell it on eBay, it may not even qualify as landfill.

Why doesn't anyone consider re-sealing these and simply put a new vinyl covering over them?  Yes, after 6 years even my Jacuzzi cover is starting to separate and I am now seeing the plastic inside is starting to deteriorate to the point it will need to be replaced.  But, I can also see that the foam is still "just fine", it's just that the plastic coating and the vinyl both need to be replaced.  Are there any sites that "re-cover/re-seal" these things?

Because the water has soaked into the foam. Foam starts to break down.

I guess mine is still in the early stages then because once the water is out, the foam dries out (pretty much completely) and the cover is pretty darn light and no breaking  down of the foam....yet.
