Freakin Finally!!!
« on: June 13, 2008, 08:14:08 pm »
Ok, the deck is going up this weekend, the crane is coming with the hot tub Monday and we actually have an electrician!! Yeeha! :) :) :)

Now for the most debated question in our house... drum roll please.   50 amp service or 60?  What do most of you have?  We are getting a 2004 Optima (yes they did say it was a 2006 Bahia but its not).

50 amp service allows for you to run 2 of 3 items. Either 2 pumps and no heater or heater and one pump.
60 amp service allows you to run all 3 at the same time.
I had electrician run 60 amp service and use 6 gauge wires.
My tub runs great with this arrangement.

Why would you not use 60 amp?

Good question Benny!!

Yeah, go with 60 amps if at all possible for maximum functionality!!

  Have fun.....Sean

He says we dont have space for 60 amp because we had a special outlet installed outside for our camper when it needs to be charged or when we are packing up and need the a/c.  I'm going to keep pushing.

Is there a major size difference between the 50 and 60 amp???

It might be her service is limited. I have a 200 amp service. I know some on this forum only have 100 amp service. If you go out to the outside of your house where the power meter is you can lift the cover and see the main circuit breaker. It will have a number like 100, 150, 200, etc. That is the maximum power you can draw with everything in your house. Now go to the main circuit breaker panel in your house and add up the numbers on the circuit breakers serving your house. The difference between those two numbers might be why the electrician is saying you can only handle a 50 amp service.

That is probably true. Although I lie to think he is a dummy head sometimes the hubby is fairly handy and I'm sure he wouldn't tell me we couldn't if it was possible.  I just wanted it all!!

Congrats on the spa a 2004 Optima beats a Bahia all to chit in my opinion.

To go 60 amp you will have to change a jumper on the circuit board to accept 60 amps if it hasn't been done yet??

It is on the wrong side of the house!  I asked him last night why we were doing it this way and it is because he had a seperate 60amp breaker box installed in the garage to run an air compressor and some other things (the pool pump) and if we directed 60 to the hot tub we would have to be juggling other things?   We still might go 60 because the pool doesn't need to always run when the spa is running especially with the short time we get to use it. (the pool not the tub)!

Oh, and they are working on my deck as we speak!!!!!!  (Happy father's day hunny)
