shocking question
« on: June 21, 2007, 04:42:09 pm »
HI -- I have a new 400 gallon spa with ozonator and bromine. I am using a SPA FROG which has Bromine and Minerals. I am confused about shocking the water. I have the Leisure time system (came with the spa) and they say to use RENEW (potassium Peroxymonosulphate) which is expensive stuff once a week or after every use as a shock. After use of the spa (my wife and i with no unusual activities :'() the free bromine level is 0 on the tester. The Renew brings it up. I think I have read that you can shock a bromine spa with chlorine. Is this true. And then do I have a mixture of Bromine and Chlorine? Should I be adding more Bromine tablets instead to bring up the bromine level?

I love my spa but sometimes I feel like I am a novice! (maybe because i am a novice!)

Blessings, Mike in Arkansas

You can use dichlor chlorine to shock a tub. Bromine will convert the chlorine to bromine.

I know very little about a bromine tub except that you're supposed to use a bromine starter, the pucks need to be added every so often to the feeder (like trichlor in a pool) and bromine tabs usually have chlorine in them.

The Frog system is a closed system in that you can't add tablets you need to add another canister. There are a few people here that use thew Frog system.

Hey Mike

I use dichlor in my tub, so I can't be much help to you with your bromine system.  I used bromine in my old tub, but that was with a floater with bromine tablets in it, which I hear most tub manufacturers now prohibit.  But I'm sure someone else here can give you some tips since a lot of people use bromide.

Congratulations on the new tub, too.  How about some photos of your set up.  (I really need to see that it's not a Haven sitting in your back yard!!!)   ;D ;D ;D

I will get some pics as soon as my daughter gets some taken -- and NO it is NOT  a HAVEN -PTL-- but I did come close -- within a day or less. It is an interesting discussion on the haven forum -- someone with a different name but the discussion sounds almost EXACTLY like the 'spa specialist'. Do you think he has some plants to ask the right questions of him?

I feel your pain...I had my tub for a whole 6 days before any unusual activity occured..hell, thats the main reason I decided to get it for my wife :)
I thought I would be out there on a daily basis for unusual activities...but then, I thought that when I got married too! :) I shoulda known better!!

Actually, I think Jimbo's left hand is typing one message, and his right hand is typing the other.   ;D
I agree that the messages sound like they could be written by the same person.
If not, he's got the makings of a great cult over there!

I especially like the new business model he's promoting:  Get people to buy "crap" tubs and pay Jim to rebuild them for them.
I can see the guys from the Guinness commercials: "Brilliant!"

PS:  You should be careful with initials like "PTL".  At a certain hot tub site we all know, I think it stands for "Pocket The Loot".   ;D
