Now I understand the alcohol involvment for those of you that are not in the Olympics.....It can only make it more exciting and dangerous!

It did beat the heck out of watching womens golf on TV! Now I want to put a table shuffle board in my basement

Can soemeone explain the sweeping thing?? I would'a thunk the zambonie would get any stray pine needles.

I watched that sometimes as a kid (we got CBC from Canada) and always thought it looked like fun. Yesterday on ESPN radio they had on Barry Merose who is their hockey expert to discuss Olympic hockey but then got into other Olympic sports including Curling. He said as a kid they had Curling classes that were mandatory in school and that every town had not only a hockey rink but a separate curling rink. Who knew? I'd love to try it sometime but I want my hands on that rock, if I wanted to sweep I could do that at home.

Gives the curlers something to do while waiting for the stone to go all the way to the other end of the lane, or alley, or whatever it's called.

The ice is "pebbled" , little droplets of water so the rocks are sliding on top of them. The brooms create friction and heat up the pebbles and the rocks goes straighter and further.   The spin of the rock causes it to "curl" or head to one side. Sweeping makes it go straighter.   If its not going far enough, or curling to much sweep!   When they say clean, its a light sweeping just to get any foreign matter off the ice. The area around the rinks have carpeting and fibers can get picked up.  A little fiber can cause a real deflection.
