2002 Sovereign (new to me) now what?
« on: September 15, 2015, 02:28:38 pm »
According to my serial number I have a 2002 sovereign hot tub made by Hot Springs I have a couple questions.

First when I plug it in why does it bubble, is that the ozonator. Second can I just use paper filters or do I need ceramic or the Tri X?
3rd what kind of sanitation system should I be using chlorine bromine or one of those all natural systems?
Thank you for any help I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to hot tubs.

Oh I forgot to mention. I have not actually started up the hot tub. I have filled it cleaned it let the Jets run and drained it twice. So if you have any advice for startup please include. I'll be using slightly acidic well water.

So if I click the temp + button all the way to 104...if I keep clicking temp + it starts to show a "u t - 1" then a "i t - 2" and keep clicking and it goes to 3 and 4...

What is  that?

Ok here goes an attempt to answer your questions, which should mostly be covered in the owners manual.

I will try to take them quickly in order, bubbles are air drawn in by the venturi tube through the ozonator, bubbles do not necessarily mean your ozonator is working, just that air is being drawn through it.  If your Ozonator is original chances are it is dead as older ones had about a 4-5 year useful life (some models now made are better)

You can use either type, there are also a number of aftermarket brand filters that will fit

As to sanitation system, I would pick something with chlorine or bromine, for a simple method I would suggest googling the dichlor then bleach method for hot tubs

You mentioned that you have cleaned the tub, how, did you use a flush product like Ahh-Some?

You ask about UT1, -UT4, for liability reasons tubs in the US usually only allow temperature settings up to 104 degrees F, UT-1 -UT-4 are over suggested temperature settings where UT-4 is about 106.5 degrees.

Thank you very much :)

I filled and super chlorinated and emptied and rinse. Did that 3 times...? Ok, ozonator makes some noise, does that mean anything?

No it means nothing, look up ozonator test kits, they are single use glass reaction tubes that you hook up to your ozonator and watch for a color change if ozone is being generated.  Cost is around $5-$10 each plus shipping online.  Although personally I don't see the point in testing if it is an older model, just invest the $100 or so for a generic Del brand replacement (they make ozonators for many of the hot tub brands out there anyway).
