OT - violence in this political race?
« on: October 24, 2008, 02:08:13 am »
I was not soaking in my tub when this happened, but I glanced out on my lawn as I was shutting off lights and going to bed this evening, and I saw my lawn signs had been trashed. I looked up and down my street and the opposing signs are not touched. I will drive around tomorrow to see if other property was violated in this was as well, and I fully plan on seeing more of the same.

I'm not going to mention what party or subject the signs represented, but I will have them replaced tomorrow and I guess I'll take them in at night.

Is it me, or is this election bringing out the childish, divisive side of just about all of us? I don't know if it is because people are more passionate about the side they have chosen, or if the media is whipping us to a frenzy by hammering on the attack rhetoric in the campaign, but something is very different about this whole election process.

Again I ask - is it me?

No its not you.  In our most affluent suburb, both parties signs are dissapearing.  In a less affluent neighborhood here a persons signs were laid up against the house and set fire to.

I got a call from a friend of mine..the committee woman for our district who asked about putting signs on my lawn. I said NO..I know who I am voting for and I doubt that signs on my lawn would influence anyone. It only serves as a target for someone who wants to start something.  This is nuts!!! And the day after the election we are all supposed to forget our differences (most that never existed before this election) and be friends and work together...The media controls this country and everything we do. It is  the biggest influence on our kids..more than parents..and it is ruining our country >:(

One of my neighbors built a sign out of thick plywood and two-by-fours. He dug the posts into his lawn, and just painted his candidate's name in large letters. Very basic, ugly and I didn't understand why he did it - until now.

I don't know how much of this gets into the news or into the general thinking of voters, but if we start using this low-level terror approach to the process of electing people and passing amendments or measures, we are not doing what I would call 'advancing' as a civilization.

One of my neighbors put a 10ft x6ft banner on his garage and put spotlights in his yard pointed at it.  I can honesty say that regardless of which candidate it was, if I could see it from my hot tub, it wouldn't be there now.  Don't mess with my relaxing soak or whats left of my dark sky.

If someone trespasses on your property at night in Texas, you can legally shoot them if you suspect that they are engaged in thievery.

None of the signs around here have been touched thus far.

I may bring my Jeep home and park it on the lawn. It's raised a bit, has big 'manly' tires on it, and an "NRA" sticker on the back. Might help?

They talked about this on the news. One house kept getting their sign removed so they nailed it up in the tree.

Even when someone TOTALLY disagrees with another its amazing that people can't still respect the other persons right to think how they want.

We have become far too polarized as a society.

I can remember this kind of stuff for many election cycles.  There are always debates about negative ads, which tend to generate this type of behavior.

I have had city council candidate signs stolen from my house.

We are polarized.

Look at the way spas are (or are not) sold; negative selling.

This is a cool tradition that they still celebrate in Georgetown Delaware (AKA Slower Lower Delaware).
I can remember going to many REturns Day celebrations and enjoying the parade and ox roast (don't remember oysters but probably because I don't like them!). I actually clearly remember Joe Biden's first election and  if I looked, I might have pictures of his first Return Day ride.  I think we need a National Returns Day...it might mellow the negativity that these looooong campaigns generate :)

From Wikipedia

Return Day
Every two years, Georgetown hosts an unusual event known as "Return day", a half-day-long parade and festival two days after Election Day. Stemming from the colonial days in which the public would congregate in Georgetown two days after the election to hear the results (because it would take that long to deliver the results to the courthouse by horseback), the winners of that year's political races parade around The Circle in carriages with the losers and the chairs of the county's political parties ceremonially "bury the hatchet" in a tub of sand. The afternoon of Return Day is a holiday for county and state workers in Sussex County, and the event is marked by a traditional oyster feast, much revelry, and, of course, the beginning of the next round of campaigns. Many in Delaware feel that the state's traditionally chummy and staid political climate is due in large part to the Return Day tradition

I'm for that. Far too many hatchets go unburied these days. It is more like the day after the election, the losing side begins it's plotting and planning to get back into office the next election.

You don't know close you are with your Palin Obama sticker.  No matter what side you are on, this Howard Stearn piece sums it all up.  Maybe you should be required to take a test before you are allowed to vote  :-?  I at least know who the VP candidates are for each man.
