Yep! It's why I'm not a fan of pillows built into the spa. I prefer adjustable, weighted pillows that can be taken out of the spa...

Although my pillows aren't 'breaking a part' yet, they are very discolored. We can thank our ozonators for this. Some things you can do with your next set that might help slow down the process of deteriation are -

1. keeping the water level an inch or so below the lowest pillow(this helps keep the waterline below them even when you're soaking)

2. when topping off your spa, hose them down along with the underside of your cover.

3. keep the cover open after adding chems

4. opening the cover every couple of days or so whether you soak or not.

Also, keep your PH in check. My spa supplier tells us they are like tires on a car, they wear out.

Design a pillow that doesn't deteriorate, and is still comfortable.  You would make millions.   ;)

I like pillows but would be just as happy without one.  Most I have seen last 4 years max,I tell my customers to remove them, if they are going away or not using the spa that often.   Jacuzzi pillows pop in and out pretty easy.

My pillows are starting to get "blisters"?  Is this normal after about 16 months?

I have seen it with ozone on 24 hours and poor water chemistry. I bet if they look, the cover is showing wear also.

I've been closing my cover after I shock. I should refrain from this?

Yes, when shocking with either mps or chlorine it's best to keep the lid off for atleast 10 minutes. This allows the off-gases to release in to the air and not your cover, pillows, diverter knobs, etc.
