For those of you shopping for a spa, NEVER buy a spa from someone who:

Sells spas out of their home.

Sells spas out of a rented storage building or warehouse.

Sells spas at roadside events, flea markets, or county fairs unless they have an established local dealer.

Claims to have an "overstock" of spas they are willing to sell at a discount.


Anyone operating out of the above scenarios is most likely running a scam.

Term thats a pretty big paint brush you got. I think it should be more along the lines of "make sure you do extensive research when dealing with these situations".

I have 2 dealer friends in separate parts of the country where they each had their own service company and started to sell spas from their house only because they were so busy in the beginning to open a store. After a couple years they had opened retail locations.

Key words are "most likely" - they could be legitimate, but more likely than not will be out of business or "moving on" in a relatively short time.

I don’t know if I would call it a scam so much as I would call them opportunists looking to make a buck on what people desire and want to buy, a Hot Tub they don’t know a whole lot about.  People who come across these opportunists should be aware of the differences when prices are less.  There is reason to heed such warnings.

I think term’s implication speaks clearly that one should know from whom they are buying, just exactly what, and who is going to be there in the future when needed. How would one expect a relationship, such as this, will fare, as time passes on.  Chances are pretty good they will be gone with your money, and have no further obligation, or responsibilities to you, or your family’s health.  

We have all heard the stories before, usually when it comes to seek warranty repairs or product failure.  But, there is more than product here that you are buying.  You are also buying a background of knowledge and understanding that you can draw from when needed.  That is what a dealer is.  Chances are, his business is anchored to a community, he handles a reputable product, he sells at a fair price to afford his overhead, but then, that is when it comes down to price and everyone wants it cheaper.  

Yeah, you’re right.  You can always get something similar cheaper, but it is never the same.

In all seriousness though, it's too bad that someone has to almost die before they actually consider similar legislation to that of commercial pools and spas that require strict watercare. Nothing like being reactive as opposed to proactive when it comes to peoples lives...

Would proper shocking prior to use eliminate the possibility of this?

Not Chicken Little, my friend.  Since there are constantly new folks finding this forum, I'm simply making a preemptive strike to help keep them from falling prey to the shenanigans of which the current members are already aware.
