Stuck in Lloydminster Alberta

Oh the glory of a development partner. :-[

So I stop for gas in the metropolis of Lloydminster, go in and pay and when I get back in my vehicle, I got noth'n. No power, no nutt'n!

I get it towed to a local service company and nowhere in this Godforsaken town is there an alternator that fits my vehicle. Guess where one is coming from tomorrow? ??? Yep, the city I started from 4 hours ago...

So here I sit in my hotel room... :-/

Anyone in the area wanna go for a steak? Like that's gonna happen! :)

You mean you don't carry an extra alternator?

I had one go on me on a long trip once - bummer. It was a holiday weekend - too long ago to remember which. But I was young, broke, and carried tools with me. My car demanded that I go everywhere prepared...

I got the battery charged at a gas station, so we could get out of the tiny town we were stuck in - driving along with the AC and stereo off was a real test of our character -  and made it to a larger community. Then I actually went to the trouble of removing it, taking it apart and replacing the brushes, right in the parking lot of the only parts store which was still open. We got to our destination - albeit with dirty hands and some ruined clothes.

The parts store had only a new alternator for my car - and they wanted way too much for it. And they didn't have a service bay to do the instalation, so I was facing the task of putting it in myself anyway.

I don't know what made me think to ask about a set of brushes, but those were about $3, and aside from the hassle of taking it apart and so forth, I felt pretty good about the whole thing. I can still remember getting it all back together, sitting in the drivers seat muttering a brief prayer, and turning the key. It just barely had enough juice left to turn it over, but it caught, and the amp guage swung over to '+' Yeah!!

That alternator went on to work fine for many years after that, if I recall correctly.
