Insulation on a hot tub

Can anyone out there in the Hot Tub world tell me the difference in R=value between foam-filled and non-foam filled spas?

That would depend on the amount of inches of foam, the density of the foam etc...  Every manufacturer has a different take on this.

Our Hot Springs dealer told us our tub has an R value of 39-40 on the sides.  R value is not a great estimator of efficiency as at some point you reach the point of diminishing returns.  Yes, R40 is great and our tub is toasty and cheap to run.   That doesn't mean R30 is bad.

I think a good hot tub cover is R-20.

For non-foam I would imagine the R value fluctuates depending on how much the pumps are going, the outside temp, wind, etc.

My Tub has an R 3000 though I've heard some have an R 9001 but that just seems preposterous to me...

Sorry play 23 but everyone will tell you theirs is best. Some will tell you R value means nothing and that there's no way to determine it accurately. Anyone remember tht post? I think it came from H2O2?

let's face facts, if a hot tub isn't energy efficient not many people are going to buy it right???  so if you go with a name brand tub you won't have any worries.  no matter if it is full foam, partial foam, thermal lock, etc....

If companies like Hot spring, dimension One, beachcomber, marquis, coleman, sundance, etc.... nade tubs that weren't energy efficent they wouldn't be in buisness for as long as they have been.  Start focusingf on the more important stuff like comfort, style, and jet placement.  And also if the dealer is reputable or not, and makes you feel comfortable with them and the product they are selling you.

That looks to me like a full-foam spa with some voids. I know they blow the hot air from the motors around in one of the air gaps, but I still think that the bulk of the energy retention is coming from the foam insulation. I love the way they use the word "polyfilm" instead of "sheet of plastic."

Oh well. I'm in for it now...

I am now building and insulating hot tubs with deer hides.  Seriously it is R bloody and my brothers wifes cousin's sisters boyfriends nephew is an engineer and he says that its a good idea.  

Thats the way us rednecks do it, booth number 3938 NSPI!
