Best hot tub for around 3.5-4k ?
« on: March 16, 2017, 08:38:13 am »
Looking for our first hot tub, mainly used for relaxation and therapeutic, we both have bad lower backs.

I'm 6.2",  wife is 5.8", will be using it 2 or 3 times a week, mounting it on the concrete patio and would prefer a plug and play 110v one that could maybe be converted to 240v in the future.
Will only be used by the two of us with maybe one of more people on the very odd occasion. We live in northern VA.

Thanks for any recommendations.

There is not much in that price range.  Maybe Nordic, but I think that is even stretching.  Unless you are willing to increase your budget, I think your best option is to find a quality used hot tub.

if you have a max 4k budget there is nothing new I can think of, especially since you'll need a deeper option because you are 6' 2" tall, look for a good used or bump that budget up to 5-5,500 and you could get into the Nordic brand (they have 1 or 2 models under 4k new but they are VERY minimalistic and will not be very deep for someone 6' 2")

We are the Nordic dealer here in MN and one great tub for 2-4 people is their round Warrior XL, it's nice and deep, plenty of jetting, 110V or 220V and we sell it with upgrades (Nordic wrap insulation, Northern Lights Package, Cover, Steps, etc. for just a little bit over 5k...Good Luck!

I agree, something used, personally I would look for a Hot Spring Soveriegn or Hot Spring Prodigy, I have the smaller Jetsetter and it is really a 1 person tub with multple seating locations, maybe 2 people if the are smaller.  The problem with the jetsetter is water displacement, if the water is low enough for 2 people then it is too low when only 1 person is in the tub and exposes the upper neck jets, this allows water to shoot about 15 feet out of the tub this happens when when they sit up or change positions.

Some years these two models were available as 120/240V convertible, when in 120V 20 amp outlet mode you get either heat or circulation pump, but not both, and the heater operates at 1,500 watts vs 6,000 watts like it would if wired for 240V 50 amps.  My Jetsetter is wired this way at 120V, I had planned to run a new 240V-50 amp circuit, but have never really felt a need, sure in colder weather the water drops a couple of degrees while the jets are running after 15-20 minutes, but I rarely run the jets longer than that anyway, and if I want to just soak with no jets the heater mostly keeps up.

If buying used my advice is don't by anything built before 1998, parts are still commonly available for tubs up to this age, and most features added since then are bells and whistles (color changing lights and displays, sound system, wifi remote control,  ...)  For most practical purposes there was lttle change to the Hot Spring tub design from 1998 - 2007.   Do watch out for the fake redwood sides on the 99 and newer Hot Spring products, 98 was the last year of real redwood on Hot Springs tubs, as you may notice the earlier fake redwood products tended to color shift with age.

Besides Nordic I would also say there are some other pretty decent rotomold options out there from several manufacturers I would also consider if hydrotherapy isn't your concern. A new tub of swirling hot water can be had for that dollar or close. Maybe a little less longevity and a bit more cost to operate but it can be had. Dream Maker and Strong to name just a couple.

It's a low end tub to start. If they paid 9500 to start they got screwed. It's a 5000 dollar tub. Because it's 14 years old it has outlived it's life expectancy. Have you seen it run? What components have they replaced? If it were me I would dispose of it for them for free, refurb it a little and sell it for 500 with a 30 day warranty.

So we've been saving up since this last post and are now able to afford something in the $8k region :) would appreciate any help in narrowing down what to look at and what to wet test:)

Weve also decided on a 240v one, I'll be running the cable to the breaker box in a  week or so.

Any dealers on here in Northern VA ?

you have some good options in that $6,500-8k range...did you scope out local dealers or do you know what brands are available to you locally? Bullfrog X-Series, Jacuzzi J-200 Series, Hot Spot collection from Hot Spring, Marquis also has a good value line, like I said a lot of options, whats close to you?
