Here's the story:
Two months ago, the late Roger Falcone sold a Jetsetter to an aging hippie couple. They had previously owned a HotSpring Spa in the early 80's and bought another in the 90's in Florida. They picked out a Sterling Marble shell and were given a $395 CoverCradle as their accessory. Everyone was happy.....and then we delivered the spa.
The customers said that the GFCI plug was too difficult for the wife to plug in. Our guys put a new plug on. It was still too difficult for her to plug in, but they would live with it.
We filled the spa. Their water was dirty. They insisted we drain it and refill it. We did and it was still dirty. They insisted we drain it and refill it again. We did and it was still dirty. We told them the filtration would take care of it and we could not remain with them because we had other deliveries.
During this time, the boss's teenage son attached the CoverCradle to the spa. The customers signed the paperwork stating we had delivered the spa that had been agreed upon. We left. Then came the weekend.
The following week, the hippies came to our store and demanded a refund. The reason? The Sterling Marble shell did not have enough gray in it. They also wanted the cheaper coverlifter (CoverMate- $225). Also, they had hosted a party over the weekend and the spa was dirty so give them their money back.
The boss told them no, but I will give you this brand new Jetsetter sitting in our showroom providing there is enough gray in the shell and we will put a CoverMate on the spa. The hippie lady said that the shell had enough gray and that would be acceptable. Everyone was safisfied......until....
The hippie lady and her husband came to the store enraged because we delivered her an UNWRAPPED spa (the very same spa she picked out in the showroom). My boss asked her "Which time?" This is when old hippie guy got mouthy and said that the spa had been written on with crayons and he started cussing in front of my boss's other teenage son. The boss said "We don't have crayons and we don't draw on the spas. I am sorry you're not happy and I want to get this resolved, but Roger passed away yesterday and I am helping to make funeral arrangements."
Hippie dude says "$LKR you and ^*^%* Roger and give me my GD money back!"
Wrong thing to say to a 6'5" 270 lb man who hates hippies anyway, but he just looked at him and said "You are evil, you are vulgar in front of my son, and you are crooks...get out of my store before I call the police."
Old hippie dude says he's going to the tv people, the newspaper, and he's going to put posters on his truck saying don't do business with East Texas Spa. My boss handed him a stack of brochures and says "Here, use these!"
They left, but it ain't over because today....they came to see me.... :)

This should be good. For the first time in my life I have a job in sales, but this goes way beyond anything I have had. I did have to babysit a major airplane manufacturer, but they were just demanding and throwing around their big name.

i comp customers fairly often that are "dead wrong", but they are repeat
customers that will keep spending money, where yours is mainly a one
time shot....
i would attempt to move on
chalk it up to the 1% nut case factor
otherwise your gonna have to deal with warranty complaints with these nuts
they are never gonna be happy
will hound you to death about every little thing
break the ties and move on
let someone else fool with these dopes
i have learned it's cheaper to "move on" and spend time on
people that will put money in your pockets, not get caught up
with ego on half wits that will never be happy and take your
focus off what you do best.

WOW...that's outrageous. I just want a good price. These people are high maintance. Maybe you should have given them a bigger discount up front and they wouldn't be in your shop complaining all the time. You obviously raped the guy on price and upset his mental stability.

Actually, I am anxious to hear how this turns out. Sounds like his customers are being absurd. The wierd part is that they owned 2 spas previously. You'd think they would know better than to complain about such trivial matters.

What we have here is some unreasonable people who are Term's worst customers ever. Doesn't matter whether they are hippies, rednecks, etc.

I am new to this forum so you all have the right to tell me to shut my trap, but I believe the hippy refrences help paint a mental picture of this story. Nothing more, nothing less. Its clear intent was not to trash all hippies.

So, I get a heads up that the old hippie couple may be heading my way. When I asked "What they look like?", I was told "Like you'd expect old hippies to look like...you'll know them. They never smile and they're just plain mean."
I damned near did a cartwheel, I was so excited!
Sure enough, they showed up about an hour later and walked into my store. I welcomed them, told them to make themselves at home and I'd be with 'em momentarily. He looked to be in his late 60's and paunchulent with longish gray hair and a yenkel (combover). She was pear-shaped and school-marmish with granny glasses and a Band-aid on the side of her nose (to hide her witch's wart).
Moments after they entered the store, another older couple who bought a Tiger River Bengal from me and Roger Falcone 2 years ago came in to get chems.
For reference:
OHL (Old hippie lady)
OHD (Old hippie dude)
VNLC (Very nice lady customer)
VNMC (Very nice man customer)
Then, the charade began:
OHL: "Are these HotSpring Spas?"
Term: "Yes ma'am. We've been selling them for 22 years."
OHL: "Is this the Jetsetter?"
Term: "Yes ma'am."
VNLC interjects: "These spas are wonderful! We've had ours for two years and we love it."
OHL: "How much do they cost?"
I told her. She kept playing ignorant as did I. She had a little notebook and was writing in it. OHD just scowled and don't say nothin'.
Now, I had been advised that they were probably going to try and see if we (they did not know my store is owned by the same man as the Tyler store) would take spas back if the customer was not satisfied. We have in the past if there were extenuating circumstances (death, imprisonment, etc), but not under the conditions in which they were trying to operate.
After some more inane banter, OHL asks "Do you ever have people return their spas because they're too hot?" (This was another of her complaints, the hot tub is too hot. Lady, it is Texas, it is a hunnert degrees everyday and your spa sits in the sun.)
VNLC (she is GREAT!): "Oh, our spa is so hot during this part of the year we don't ever even use it. I can't imagine why ANYONE would want to return a HotSpring Spa. We've owned other spas that were just junk, but this is the best money we've ever spent."
OHL just grunts.

OHL: "We turn the heater off and it's still hot...um...would it be if we turned the heater off?"
Term: "I've had customers turn their spa down to twenty degrees below zero and their spa is still a hunnert and five. It's a HOT TUB.. they're made to stay HOT. We sell them in Norway, Alaska, Greenland, Mesopotamia...some of the coldest places on earth. They are made to stay hot and to do so more efficiently than any other spa. The only drawback to that is during August and early September in East Texas, they are too hot to use unless you take some steps to counteract the heat."
Hold on, I have to get another beer. I';ll be back tin a little bit...

Term: "Hot enough to bake your biscuits."
OHD smiles. He has fairly nice teefths, although I don't know if they is real.
VNLC: "We take milk jugs and fill them with water and stick them in the freezer. Then we throw them in the spa and it helps cool them down a little bit."
OHL: "But if we left the cover on, would it still get really hot?"
Term: "Oh my gawsh, the cover makes the problem even whores! Prop the lid open a bit and get some airflow throwgh there and it will help."
OHL: "Oh, these pillows are new." (Talking about the redeisign that occrueed about a months ago)
Hold on, I have to pee.
Term: "Yes ma'am, they redeisiengd them about a month ago. The new pillows are great."
OHL: "Can you put the new ones on older spas?" (Once again, tipping her hand)
Term: "You can but you'd have to drill a hole in the spa."
Anyways, blah, blha blah, she just kept asking inane questions one after anotyher.
I excused myself to help the nice couple who just kept on imploring that the old hippies buy a spa. I got their chemiscals, walked them out to their car, and they left.
I had every intention of giving them the chems free , but couldn't do it in front of the hippies. But I'll take great care of them next time and explain the situation to them.
Gotta go, back to wrap it up.

I left out a lot of stuff due to time constraints, but I think the old man really liked me. I got him to chucklin' a few times and he seemed alright. The old hippie lady? Totally self absorbed, malevolent prude.
I think the old man was ready to buy a spa from me.

Actually, there usually isn't much nasty here, and at least most of the rambling makes sense. There is very little racism and classism here, so why should there be social exclusion? And what is it to you what offends me?

No it probably wont make him less judgemental, and if you find me judgemental for not approving of "hippie" being made derogatory, then that is fine. But it was derogatory, and that is not OK with me. Too liberal for you? Deal.
And I was not apologizing. I was explaining why something that would always hit a nerve turned into something that I felt irritated enough to address.

He makes you laugh and that is OK but if JA was doing this you would claim BS I bought a Bullfrog and I went to Terms store he is an arrogant asshole and I did not argue with him his sales pitch is everything sucks but what he sells, This is not good for the industry a certain brand will not fit everyone, And I find his bitching about customers offensive.
I take what I need from here and leave the bullshit to the Term. followers.

That is the ultimate goal of everyone in the forum, for each person to get the spa they want. It doesn't matter what brand, style, make, color, number of jets, 110/220: If you are happy with your spa-Great. Enjoy it. :D

No, I have NEVER said everything else sucks. When people actually come to my store, I warn them about the crap being sold out of the Thrifty Nickel, out of storage buildings, and from a certain local dealer with an "Unsatisfactory" BBB rating. I give my opinion that if you buy a HotSpring, Sundance, Marquis, Dimension 1, or Jacuzzi Spa, you will be happy with it. If someone asks about Bullfrog, I tell them they are a good spa and the people that sell them seem like good folks.
Now, I carry on a lot on this forum and the more intellectual members realize that it is self-deprecating and tongue-in-cheek. I can take (and enjoy) some ribbing from the other folks on here, but I have NEVER had anyone call me an arrogant asshole in my life. No one's certainly ever done it to my face.
Why don't you do this: come back and see me and I'll turn the internet cameras on and we can rassle live for folks to watch. I'll even give you some free chemicals for your inconvenience. I'm here 10-6, Tuesday thru Saturday.

I, for one, will not be a follower. Term has provided ample entertainment and even more solid and sound advice. Even in times when it would have been very easy to be mean to a forum poster (see numerous threads posted to by Solo in the last month where many people got very frustrated and commented as such), Term took the high road and continued go give good info.
Had I not been 2000+ miles away, East Texas Spas would have been my first stop for shopping.
Keep up the good work Term.

As I keep trying to tell newbies on this forum who are afraid of "sharks", just sit back and read for a while and you can tell who's honest & fair, and who's not. "Term" has always been one of the good ones. Considering it's far EASIER to lie and slander on the internet & get away with it, I have every expectation that Chris Ogden is a good guy. I wouldn't trust him with my monkey, but he's a good guy.

My name is Jo and I AM a Term follower. When I come to this site, if I see Term has a new subject posted, it's the first one I read. I love his quick wit and sense of humor and I always get a chuckle from his posts. Sometimes he's even serious and helps people! Those aren't as much fun to read tho........ ;)

Tyheethan, Mr. Roberts, and Ms. LurkyGal, thank ya'll for your kind words. This nonsense has got me somewhat bristled, and I don't bristle easily.
Anyone can get on the internet a make claims and say what they want to say. That's fine and dandy. I've always had a hankerin' to pretend to be Uncle Remus online, except most people know he's not real and if he was, he would already be dead, and if he was still alive, he probably wouldn't be on the internet because his cabin didn't have electricity.
So, some internet entity jumps on and slanders me, saying I'm an arrogant butthole. I am proud of what I do and what I sell and what I represent. Some people may see that as puffery. I catch myself being pufferous at times and I don't like it and I take myself down a peg or two.
One thing I have never been is rude or unaccomodating to anyone in my store with the exception of a handful of folks over the years who have been condescending, smart-aleck, or vulgar. When people come into my store and act like decent human beings, I treat them like old friends. I was completely courteous and respectful to the lying, swindling hippie couple, even though I knew the back story. They were friendly to me, so I was friendly in kind.
Tell me, Clown Shoes, where was the Jetsetter you wet-tested? What store? Which mood room? Did I offer you a drink? What terrible things did I say specifically about Bullfrog? ? ? ?

I know Term. I have worked with Term. The only time I have EVER heard the word arrogant and Term in the same sentence is to say he is not. Term is one of the friendliest and good natured people I have ever met. Now, he has pulled a gun on me, but he had a huge grin on his face when he did it. ;)
Clown Shoes, you were not nice in your post. You said some not so nice words. I don't know why you feel this way, but I have some ideas. I won't stoop to your level, but I think you should either apologize or go away. We like this forum to be a friendly, open exchange.

If it's any consolation, if I was in term's area, I'd shop his store. Shoot, if I hadn't already bought, I might drive out to TX just to see what all the hoopla is about. I doubt that anyone with an IQ larger than their shoe size bought clown's story. He's kinda like those monkeys, he's just slinging poo.

WOW! Somehow I skimmed over what Clownshoes said until today as I was reading over these replies. (When there is a lack of grammar and structure, my eyes just wander to the next thread).... and I have to say....WTF??? Even if I'm not thrilled with the hippie reference, I still think that Term is one of the best contributors here. Arrogant? Everything else sucks? Bullshit? Holy Toledo! At least get your criticisms in the right universe!

My vote is for Terminator!
I think he was the first to respond to my first post.
Terminator is funny, knowledgeable, and very generous
with sound advice about hot tubs. Term like several other
members that sell hot tubs is helpful no matter what brand
of tub you own. Term has invited me whenever I am over in
East Texas to drop by his store and his annual spa open house
party knowing I already own a new spa made by a different maker.
The guy is just plain nice!
Yeah Term worships the brand he sells/owns
but thats a good thing isn't it? Would you really
want someone selling you something they didn't
believe in themselves? And Term's brand (HS)
from what I read is one of the very best in the
industry.
This site would not be the same without Terminator.
Please Term do not let this attempt at some sort

I enjoy my virtual fellowship with you fine people on this forum, which is without a doubt the best source of spa information on the internet. I do cut up a little too much sometimes and I admit that I don't know squat about water chemistry and other voodoo, but I have seen a lot of spas over the years and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize what does and does not work in this industry.
In fact, I am heading out tomorrow to visit the Great State Fair of Texas in Dallas to do a little spa research. The year before last, I did an in-depth write up on my adventure. Last year, I spent most of the day looking for Spaman (he was supposed to meet me there...I brought a bunch of Monte Cristo cigars to trade him for a new pair of Crocs, but he changed companies about that time and didn't show up) so I was unable to do much comparison. I will try to see what I can discover this time around and report back.
Friday, I am taking Ol' Meanness to the Red River Revel in Shreveport, LA. It is the big art and debauchery festival that Louisianerans are infamous for. We have a booth set up next to one of the stages. I went over there last Saturday night and there was a Czechoslavakian lady singing and she was great...but I couldn't understand her. Emylou Harris was singing on the other stage down by the Red River. She had a purty voice and mouth.
We will spend the night in Shreveport and have our pleasures together, something that is rare in this day and age.

Mmmmmmm.....nanner egg rolls! I'm allergical to nanners, but in the interest of furtherin' nowledge, I shall partake and report on this newest and most delectable sounding bit of southern culinary initiative.
On another note, since I'm so arrogant and mean-spirited, I am amazed at what just transpired betwixt me and one of my customers.
It seems that about 5 years ago, a gentleman sent his son to my store with the instructions to buy "the biggest, best spa they got!". At the time, the HotSpring Landmark was the king of spas, I showed it to the good son and gave him a price. He called his dad, who was at "his villa in Mexico" to report his findings. Father said "buy it", we delivered it to his local home, and made another happy customer. Over the years, he has offered to let me use his 8-bedroom home on the Mexican coast at my leisure...all I have to pay for is $30/day to run the airconditioner.
The gentleman just came by the store to get some new filters, told me to sell his old spa so he can buy a new HotSpring Vista with SpAudio. Then, he practically said he was going to kick my butt if I don't hurry up and take his offer of hospitality. I don't really know the man and it's a long ways down to his place.
What would ya'll do if put in this position?

Again, I'm out of town and, too tired to check this forum at the end of the day.....Today, when I got home, and, checked the latest n the "hippie couple" saga...I had to smile...Twinkies, Emmy Lou Harris, etc........Damn Term, if I wasn't in TN I would have purchased my Hot Springs from you!!!!!
As to the new buyer in Mexico...Take a vacation! Take the little missus! Check out the spa site in Mexico! Take the tub rat's (no offense intended)! Sell the guy a spa, enjoy your self in the process, write it off on your taxes as a business expense...(ooops, did I say that!!???)...Heck, who knows how many possible buyers you may end up with across the border......Possibly a new dealership in Mexico!!!????!!!!
BTW my new Hot Springs spa to be delivered on October 27, barring any more nonsense from the zoning folks and life in general I hope to be in SPATOPIA on the 28th....

I stayed up until 3 in the mornin' the other night trying to figure out who this myserious visitor to my store might have been. As I have said, there have been a few folks over the years that I just did not communicate well with and a couple that it was mutual hate at first sight. This is what I came up with as possibilities:
1. The little Italian man- came to my store to look at a Jetsetter. He talked very loud and growled a lot and had no concept of personal space. He had asked that as soon as I got a Jetsetter to call him as he wanted to come and look at it. I only understood about a third of what he was saying, but I believe he kept harping on "Bullfrog's a lotta cheapa than you'se!" I said "Yes, they always have been. Everyone is usually cheaper than us, but year after year we outsell 'em all. We have cheap spas too, but the Jetsetter ain't one of them." He kept rolling his eyes and making growling noises. I got his name and phone number. He left.
When I got a Jetsetter in, I tried to find his number and couldn't. Once I did, I couldn't read his handwriting, so I figured he would come back if he was serious.
A few weeks later, I was at the fair and he came by my booth. I recognized him and waved and he kept saying "Ya shoulda called me...ya shoulda called me!" I apologized and watched him walk away....and was relieved.
2. "Pink" Floyd- a customer I go to church and play softball with sent one of his neighbors to my store, told him "Go see Chris, he's a good guy." When Pink Floyd and his wife showed up, about all he said was "So, what makes these better than a Bullfrog?" I said "Bullfrog's a good spa and if you got one you'd probably be happy with it, but they do things a little different than we do. If you have a few minutes, I'll be happy to point out how we do things."
I showed him how he could move some of our jets around if he wanted (very few people ever move the jets even though it only takes about 30 seconds to do so), I talked about our circ pump, filtration, service department, etc. He just stood there and didn't say anything. He then said "Well, I've already decided to get the Bullfrog." I say "Why did you come here, then?" He replied "because of Davis". I told him "Well, keep us in mind when you get ready to buy a new one." (I can see where this might have sounded snippity, but I was not real enamored with the guy. I no longer say this when people have bought another spa because it does sound rude.)
3. Hippo-Sex man- the last possible culprit would be the 300+ pound perv who approached me in the store, looked to the left, looked to the right, and leaned towards me and said "Listen, I'm gonna cut straight to the chase...I want a spa for one thing...KITTY! I mean, I'm gonna be havin' pile-driving hippo sex in that thing and I want something that'll give me room to maneuver." He had space limitations (the spa was going in some kind of 'playroom' with video and sound) and I told him, quite frankly, that he was going to be splashing water all over the place with his size. Anyway, it ticked him off and he left in a huff.
I'll bet Clown Shoes is number..........crap, it's after 6:00! I'm off to the fair!

Well, once again, Term's story tellin' abilities reach new heights. I'm LMAO.
But, after that little rundown (and I do mean rundown), I'd be surprised if Clownshoes admits to being "da man" in any of those episodes, even if so.

So I don't post on here that much either (although I am on here almost daily), but Term, I'm glad as hell your here. And like a lot of other folks have said, your info and funny banter is something I always look for and appreciate.
