Hey guys, in your opinion, what is the best portable hot tub for around 1000 bucks?
Debating between HotSprings and Spa in a box. Are there others that I should consider?

Nate, Welcome to the fourm. I would go with the SeaMonkey Elite if you have the extra space. If might cost you a couple hundred extra dollars but it will be worth it. Good luck with the purchase. Take some photos for us.

Sounds like you would be a perfect candidate for a Thermospa or Haven. That's about what they're worth.

If you only have a $1000 budget you may want to
check CraigsList.com in your area.
Sometimes you can get nice used spas for around
$1000 on CraigsList.

You are looking at used for that price, right? You won't find a good quality new spa for that price. I don't think most dealerships can buy one from the manufacturer for that price.
Take Zep's advice. Look around for used if that is your budget. Stick with the name brands as well. You'll have better luck.
Also check with your local dealers, sometimes they get used spas in trade and want to re-sell them.

I don't think for a grand you can get anything worth the time and trouble. That's not to say, look around, you never know, but chances are you're only buying something that you're going to have to pay someone $400 to haul to the landfill next year. ::)
It's kind of like asking, "What's the best used car I can get for $600?"

It says "portable" but what does this really mean? On the Hotspring, it doesn't look "portable" to me. I'm looking for something that is truly portable - something I can break down into smaller pieces and store in a relatively small space when I'm not using it. I live in New York city, so space is a major issue.

Zep, PERFECT. Yeah, that's exactly the kind of setup I'm looking for. Obviously none of these are very high quality, but I'm guessing that there are ones that are crap and others that are at least decent. Any portable hot tubs like these that you know are good brands? Or does it even matter?

Move out of the city and into the burbs like the rest of us and get a real spa.
If you own something in NYC, you'll get a ton of money by selling and you can buy something outside the city and spend less (maybe) and put the rest of the money on an 8'x8' spa!

Ahhhh. Yes, the word "portable" is confusing. All the tubs that are self contained (the ones we talk about here) are technically refered to as "portable" as they are self contained and except for the electricy, can be moved (Although you'll need some help moving them). . They are not permanent fixtures like an inground pool, or are plubmed to seperate pumps and heaters. They sit idnependently on a base.
The REAL portable spas that can infalte, break down or rolled around have smaller pumps and heaters, are a 110v set up. I've seen them listed from $1200-2400 dollars. There's not much talk on this fourm about them though.... :-/

Good. Well hopefully this'll spark a bit of conversation on these "portable inflatable" spas. I've always wanted a hot tub, but didn't ever think of it as a practical option here in New York. BUT after flipping through one of those SKY mall catalogs, I found one of those inflatable guys and got very interested.

I'm not sure how much discussion you'll get, (but maybe we can spark some..)
with the spa, are you going to keep it set up for long periods of time, or just break it out for partys and stuff?
Are you going to put this outside on a deck, or patio or in the house?
I'm curious how long it takes to heat up, emtpy and store away. It will be wet. There are a couple of hundred gallons of water...
the infaltable one seems easier while the spa in the box requires you to snap the panels togethor, and insert the liner.
You can put a more traditional tub inside a house (its done all the time), but there is the cost, and humidity issues. Tubs range from small (size of a conventaional bathtub that can fit into a corner, to -as you know- the big boxes. If size and space are the ONLY issue, you've got many options, but if it's price and temporary set up, the two you mentioned seem to be the more popular items.....

Nate....I have never seen much discussion on this
board about the inflatable type of hot tubs.
Most of the dealers on this site that offer advice
do not sell and probably have very little interest in
those types of hot tubs.
But for your specific case with the space limitations
and budget limitations one of the inflatable hot tubs
may work for you.
Please keep us updated on how it works out for you.

I can't speak for the other inflatable hot tubs out there since I have never owned an inflatable, but we were in your boat nate with wanting something not over $1000k but I didn't want a kiddie pool either. We bought a Spa-n-a-box about four years ago and never looked back. Its kinda got a modular thing going so you slide the panels into place to create the structure- its super durable feeling and we have three kids! I have actually had two of our friends and a family member of ours buy them after seeing ours. Priced right and you get the same 104F as $$$ tubs. We were going to actually get this and then eventually upgrade to a big one (we weren't sure about how it would do with NY winters, but so far so good after four seasons!) but the Spa-n-a-box is perfect for us and I don't feel like joining the rest of the economy by going into debt.
