I am of the opinion that there has been some hypocrisy and meanness here in the last few days, but I'd be delighted if others could convince me that this is not so. I have slowly developed respect for this forum's attempt to treat all spa owners and brands equally, but then there are days that it seems to be such a farce. I know that you know of what I speak, and I'm not looking to have ANOTHER locked thread, so if all you have is bitterness or spite, keep it to yourself.
In my view, the only thing Perogie did wrong was not address himself as an Arctic dealer, if that is what he is, so his statements were perceived as bad marketing. From historic threads here I can see that some may have immediately gotten their knickers is a twist over this, but COME ON. And I, like most others, just dont want to debate "dead horse" cr@p all day, but like spahappy said, 'certain well known posters/spa saleman on this forum can drone on and one about what they see as the benifits of the brand of spa they sell and claim they have " the best filtration/technology/insulation in the industry" and thats fine.' Even the ol' FF vs TP doesn't get as heated as when someone says the A word.
I have been as subject as anyone here to Arctic's bad sales techniques, but I'm going to give any newbie here a little room to get to know us all. Ya'll have gotten so cynical and jaded that it is sad. I'm one of the most cynical people I know, and I'm still dismayed. This group can be like a pack of dogs sometimes, going for the one that is down. Sure, you need to be thick skinned to stay on any forum, but that does not mean that the SAME group of people should regularly feel ostracized. We should have equality in criticism.

Well said Anne!!!
-
Well said but impractical as the loudest and sometimes rudest voices here are of salespeople who will turn the most innocent questions into a reason their tubs are best. Myself and a few others here are in the minoity as Bullfrog owners, and already have been the subject of scornful remarks by several so called educated sales people. Speaking only for myself, I avoid any direct comparisons to any other name brands when talking about specific problems or features. You're right though, there is much knowledge here. Too bad egos and the feeling of self import most times cloud that knowledge.
-
It happens on a lot of forums not just this one. Most people can just move on and some can take it very personal as sad as that might be.
I think here its some of the competition in sales which every salesman faces every day no matter what the product is,everyone thinks theres is the best, hey we are entitled to that, if someone ask a question about a specific spa most here are able to give there advise and thoughts on that spa, but move over if there is another dealer that wants to put his 2 cents worth into the pot, chances are your not selling the guy/gal a spa anyway so whats it even matter except the fact every dealer here would love to see them in there brand of spa, but let them decide what will work for them and give them the best advise you can which I feel most dealers/salesman/saleswomen do here.
The worst thing you can do on any forum is feed a troll!! All they do is keep aging you on to get as much chit stirred up as possible on any given forum.
Did Perogie deserve what he/she got probably not, but if he/she wants to contribute to the common good then I am sure he/she could come back and post his/her thoughts lets hope this happens but if he/she is not able to do that it will show up pretty quick.
Anyway thats my 2 cents worth, weather its right or not its MY opinion.

Since where on the subject of hostility, the movie Hostel was great. I heard some talk of a sequel. I can't wait! :)
hostel-
1. a hotel providing overnight lodging for travelers
2. inexpensive supervised lodging
hostile-
1. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of an enemy
2. opposed in feeling, action, or character; antagonistic
3. characterized by antagonism.
4. not friendly, warm, or generous; not hospitable.
-
Anne.....There is definitely an element of "my tub's better than yours" on this message board but I suppose it would be odd to expect otherwise.
I find in life that it is sometimes difficult for many people to rejoice in other's success/happiness or to cheer for others taking a different path from their own.
I work with people that whenever someone quits they immediately start quietly attacking the person leaving implying that they are an idiot, or that the person departing is gonna fail at their new endeavor....blah blah blah.
Such is life........just be thankful you are not afflicted with this insecurity!
-
In my opinion, (the one with the most weight right now) That thread was started just for the point of starting the tired old debate all over again. Term does use that 100% filtration cartoon quite a bit, but its usually meant to be amusing.
My sensitivity here has been heightened recently, and I may become a littler heavier handed for awhile.
-
Maybe it would have been better received if he'd dipped his toes in the water first rather than attempting a Triple Lindy on his first dive into the website. I thought it was a bit over the top in his first couple posts but many of us have made some bold statements in the past so we'll hold off on the petition to have him flogged. ;)
-
'certain well known posters/spa saleman on this forum can drone on and one about what they see as the benifits of the brand of spa they sell and claim they have " the best filtration/technology/insulation in the industry"
Sorry. I'll try to ease off a bit.

This is my last post here on this fourm. We all know arctic pricing is higher than other brands out there.
i think people that live in the south do not understand what difference in temperature makes on trying to keep water warm.
my posts where not to say that FF is not a good way to insulate. it is. my point was you need to insulate everything that you dont want to freeze. If you cant see that leaving something non-insulated is not a good idea, then i dont know what to say.
up here in the winters if you dont want something to freeze you have to insulate.
so having everything that can freeze insulated is a better idea than only having half the product that way.
i'm not sure what it matters who i am or what i do. there is a company out there called havenspas that has a website out there that suggests the same ideas.
good bye

Well, I think that says it all.

Perogie!!!!!!! I was trying to help you!!!!! What the H&ll????????? Arctic pricing? Insulate everything? HAVEN??? You're right, MLG- that says it all. I still stand by what I said, but I'm pissed at him now, too. ;) >:( ;)

Sorry. I'll try to ease off a bit.
I wasn't pointing fingers. Well, not in any very specific direction, that is :-*

Er, I didn't misspell it......or are you just throwing that out there in an attempt to demonstrate that you dont care about the real subject?

Since perogie has said goodbye, the question of how he was greeted is somewhat moot. However, since I was one of the folks to question his motives, I'll offer an explanation of why I participated in the less than warm welcome.
As a spa owner, I find the industry people's contributions helpful -- when they don't go overboard positioning their brand or its features as as "best"! IMO, if perogie had taken the time to read some of the history on this site, he'd have seen that recital of marketing materials/sales training usually gets shouted down pretty quickly, regardless of brand. Perhaps he underestimated the audience. I think that coming out of the gate spouting obvious sales points made many of us wary. When he did the little passive/aggressive thing of typing another company's name in lower case, while capitalizing the one he preferred, followed by disingenuously posting his "innocent question" regarding a completely frozen tub as a set up for an opportunity to play up another marketing point of his favorite tub -- IMO he got the same reception that any member would have. If I remember correctly, if you look back to the thread where an infamous "filtration diagram" first appeared, it got plenty of negative response, as have several other folks who have tried to positon their tub as best. IMO, the ones who didn't pack their bags and leave contribute greatly to the discussion on this forum.
I agree that the Watkins folks tend to get away with more, probably because there are more of them on the board, and there are only a few representatives of other brands that come here frequently enough to call them on it. Realistically the two biggest Watkins promoters get away with it for reasons other than brand favoritism. Term's humor, and Chas' willingness to help folks, buy them some tolerance when they slip into sales mode. Luckily, they don't abuse it too often. The other Watkins reps don't go out of bounds any more often than the other brands, and a couple actually go out of their way to keep their brand preferences hidden in order to offer helpul advice.
I know the owners of brands like Arctic, Master, Bullfrog, etc have to endure a lot of negative statements about the brand they decided was best for them. While I'm sure that it isn't fun to read that constantly, I'm also surprised that they take it so personally. The negative comments are usually about a the way a tub is marketed, not the tub itself (Bullfrog, excepted) and I don't see why that would be a reflection on the individuals who own them. As I have said before, owners like Anne, Bosco, WSD, In Canada, and many others do more for the reputations of the brands they own, than anyone who comes on here trying to promote them ever accomplishes.
-
Er, I didn't misspell it......or are you just throwing that out there in an attempt to demonstrate that you dont care about the real subject?
I wasn't implying anything towards anyone. That movie just popped into my head when I heard the word hostile. The reason I typed the definitions was just to clarify the meaning of the two. I didn't know what hostel was until I looked it up a few months ago. I didn't want people to think I was using the word in the wrong context. They're homonyms and that's it. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know the difference. :-[

Maybe what Anne was trying to convey is that recently we, as a group, have become more cynical, more suspicious of the intentions of each new member. Each new members' first posts are analyzed and scrutinized to first determine if he has a hidden agenda. So what if he does? There aren't any other boorish condescending sales members here? Are you guys trying to generate sales among the members here? If not, why act this way?
I was told that this site was a great place to share and exchange knowledge, generic knowledge, about the upkeep and enjoyment of our hot tubs. Well it's pretty clear to me that at best that is it's secondary purpose.
-

I respectfully have to disagree with you on this one Repeat. I went to a couple of forums looking for help/insight into being a new hot tub owner, and by far, this is the best forum I have found for help. Sure, sometimes the threads turn into pi**ing contests and some threads have nothing to do with hot tubs, but ask a sincere question, and you will get a dozen helpful people giving you answers. I actually think this would be a rather boring forum without the interaction that takes place here...the good and the bad.

I too look for info from this site but it has turned into a contest of some sort, especially if you do not fall into lock step with some "members".
I also will say goodbye, and will look for info elsewhere.

I also have to disagree. As with anything in life, when people come here in a humble way, they gain the trust and respect of others. When they come in an arrogant way, others get suspicious.
-

Count me in as disagreeing as well. I come here for one reason and that is to get (and on very very few occasions OFFER) information. I have tried other Spa forums, but this one is by far the MOST FUNCTIONAL. Hey, if a salesman gets a little jab in there now and again, so be it. I can filter that out as a mature adult.
Anne is spot on. I have seen a few postings run amuck, including the one I started regarding an outside clock. But for the most part the threads are very useful and entertaining as well.
I for one am staying, until I get booted off... 8-)

It's easy to disagree when you're one of the fortunate few. As for Tony, come here humble? F_CK that! Humble?? why? so I might be priveleged enough to have you actually consider my post with respect? Where the hell do you get off? Jackass.
-
I agree with Anne and Northwoods. I am defintly a newbie, but by spending a bunch of time here, just reading (and posting very occasionally) I was able to buy, setup and maintian my spatopia myself. I dont have a ton of money and by listening to others here and asking questions occasionally, I too have a healthy spa.
I dont have a problem with everyone putting their two cents in because many of us, can tell when to disregard a specfic post or a poster all together.
All you guys are wonderful and I look forward to read more and more every day.
-
As for Tony...
Tony is one of the good guys. IMO, most of his posts are among the most helpful on here. The profanity and name-calling were classless. If you feel your posts aren't treated with respect, this may be an example of why.

Again I totally disagree with you Repeat, only this time, with absolutely NO respect.

So February is the most depressing time of the year.....it shows on this forum lately. Getting all the anger out is good for the soul I guess. I have been a member on this forum for a couple of years and have seen all the different types of posters, we all fit into categories. We are "The Breakfast Club" for hot tubs for all of you old enough to remember the 80's movie. Can't wait for Spring.

RO and RobRoy,
You guys are definetly going to be in the minority here.
Nobody is keeping you here.
Goodbye.

I agree with ya MLG! Doesn't take a rocket scientist to sift through the good and bad information. This is the internet,so almost anything is possible on it.
I too think this is the best hot tub board cuirrently out in cyber land. Docs board has great info to be had,but me personally, can't get around working in and with his shell. This shell is very user friendly.
I personally love the spawar thread, and as most can attest,it's done for fun,and at the expense of someone who genuinely deserves it. The FF verses TP has been hashed again and again, and I generally stay outta those things.
Lastly, this is a free site, and no-one is forcing anyone to come and go.
P.S. ..... did I mention,this is the internet? ;)
-
Wow, what a bunch of happy campers. I've been gone for a few days and come back to find all this love on here. Maybe some people would be better off if they spent more time in their tubs and less time on their computers. To quote Rodney King "can't we all just get along?".
-

I guess I pronounce hostile like a brit, cuz I use it with a long "i". So they dont seem like homonyms to me, but I guess they could be.
You've never stayed in a youth hostel?
Thanks for clarifying.
-
WOW! :o
I hate to see this stuff happen but, like was posted before, it's the internet.
I know for myself that I'm definitely not as "sharp" as the people who are dealer/salesman or just plain old experienced tubbers. I have to read a post twice before I understand all the hooha! But, I do see the intentions eventually.
I personally don't get offended by anyone here. Although I think my ears have rung a few times after some of my "less than stellar" posts. ;D
Anyway, I was lucky in the fact that this was the first forum I came to. I haven't gone anywhere else for info. Every single person whoever responded to my posts was positive.
I won't go to another forum simply because I choose not to.
Besides, I can't wait to finally show pics to ya'll when I do get my tub. And just to show I'm sincere, I promise to wear a SPEEDO for one of the pics I post. :-[
If that doesn't scare people away, nothing will.
Thanks again to everyone for your input that has helped me.

You best not be sitting down in the tub for that pic!! ;)

Don't go away mad......................... ;D
You get disagreed with once, and you bail? Must be single then. Or perhaps that was you best shot and you have no more? There are owners, and representatives here from many manufacturers that manage to get along, sometimes I have to make them behave though.
Don't worry, I understand, I was picked on as a kid too.
-
I agree that the Watkins folks tend to get away with more, probably because there are more of them on the board, .
Thank you for not saying because they advertise here. I don't see that money and nobody has ever suggest I bias anything. My moderation is totally random and arbitrary.

Yea, that one made me mad too. Oh, I haven't found a good picture, but it was a atomic (self setting clock) from La Crosse Technology that I got for less than $20 from Amazon. Still works great. The white face is easy to read in even star light.
I for one am staying, until I get booted off... 8-)

For those who don't know, Speedo only comes in sizes up to 38, but they stretch.

Nope. :-[

... My moderation is totally random and arbitrary.
That is obvious! ;) ;D
I think the recent thread about Watkins' problems with their auxillary control panels is proof that negative posts are not being censored. If they had control, that thread would have disappeared.
-
Probably just more Watkins end users and dealers on this forum due to market penetration. I don't think there's any favoritism or censorship here that I'm aware of.
This is a happy place. If I need stress, I will just go to work. Let's all get along damn it.:)

I'm not a fan of horror films especially that particular type (having one character forced into contemptible acts in an effort to save their own particular interest) simply for the "entertainment" of the antagonist. Seems to me that having to saw off one's own foot would also have turned off a guy like Why Not. 2 eachs own but I think that the similarities between the words was a given to anyone over 25. Maybe I'm just getting old?
Then again it is pronounced Host'-el and Hos-til' when done "correctly" but then again I have lived in the south long enough to realize that 99.8% of the people around me would pronounce them both as Hos-til' around here so I guess your association is accurate here too.
-
As for Tony, come here humble?
Sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. It was not my intent and I certainly don't want to be a "repeat offender" but my point is you cannot come here with a know it all attitude and expect people to respect you. I, the jackass, will say no more about this.
As for youth hostels...I have never stayed at one, but one of my sons will graduate HS this June and promply go backpacking in Europe for three weeks staying at hostels. I am learning more about them now, though my wife has stayed in hostels in Europe and has some familiarity.
-
A friend and I took a road trip through Canada several years ago, like 1970 something man. Entered Canada at Windsor, stayed in hostels at Quebec, Montreal, and Rimouski they were all pretty simple but we did meet some nice folks (to stick to the subject, no one was hostile). It was tough in Montreal and Quebec since neither one of us spoke French. :-[ The one in Quebec I think was an old castle-like building, very unique, I believe it overlooked a river. Cost was anywhere from $1.25 to $2.00, American, per night.
-
You best not be sitting down in the tub for that pic!! ;)
;DMLG,
I hope you have a strong stomach or, you've had a few Shiner Bocks before perusing the pic.

I agree, it's just too much for some people. Having to see and hear some of the things that I have, it really doesn't bother me. It's actually quite entertaining......afterall it is just a movie.
Btw, I think you're talkin' about the SAW trilogy and yes I like those movies as well. :)

Sounds like many of us might have to leave this forum is that happens....The next thing you know Term will get jealous and post a picture of himself in his Batman Speedos.
I don't want to be around when that happens... ;) ;D 8-)

I haven't been around this site very long. Lately, have rarely posted. Just lurked around to see if someone needs water chemistry help or help starting some old hotspring spa.
I see this site as a pretty tight group of folks brought together by hot water. It's one of the few fraternities I would ever care to be associated with. (No offense you college frat ladies and gents).
I haven't posted because many of you are seasoned hot tubbers who've been well educated by a proffessional or have saught out the info on your own. Chas beats me to any hotspring problem and most of the hot tub USERS here accurately diagnos water care problems.
I get a big kick, as many other here too, of Term's abilities with photoshop and the story lines and quick whit he lays down. It is a fun place.
Good for you to be suspicuous of some of these unscrupulous silver-tongued salespeople.
If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a spa store owner. Well, that's a lie. It's now two stores.
-
I couldnt agree more, I was told by a certain salesman that I was trying to be a wise guy when I asked a question about a pic he posted.
IF you are referring to when I replied somewhat indignantly to this "question" you posed:
Wow Tex, those pics of old HS, it seems that there are some issues, not only with alot of mechanical problems that I have been reading on the forum lately, but with there construction also. Its nice to see the pics, not only does HS sell alot of spas , but they do build some junk also.
....it's because you forgot to put the correct punctuation (?) anywhere in the statement and I was confused by your intentions, which evidently were purely innocent in their entirety. Please forgive my oversight.
Oh, I forgot, you're gone. :(
I agree anne, some folks on here have got their dander up fluffingly as of late and I pledge to do my part to help keep the peace amongst the hooligans.

As they say...an armed society is a polite society. Since this forum is a virtual society, I remain virtually armed for the betterment of the defenseless.
Seems as though you and I have remained in the good graces of the Mob due to our good deeds and helpful nature. We should continue to offer a similiance of concern whilst spreading our propaganda. They'll never know what we're really up to if we play it straight. Hee hee harr!
Delete this PM as soon as you read it. I'd hate to lose their confidence now after we have jumped through so many hoops cultivating their favor.

It's been my experience that it's give and take. Hostile? Not at all. This forum is rated PG tame when compared to other internet message boards. Personaly, I like it when there is passionate discussion. If it gets out of hand, I fully expect people to speak up and say so, but I do not think this forum is like a pack of dogs. I respectfully disagree with you Anne. In fact, I think as much as you see a pack of dogs mentality, I see victums crying that they don't get equal treatment. I think they do.
I think the key differences is the dealers who can laugh at themselve and not play the drama queen with the discussion gets heated tend to fare better.

People who are that sensitive and take a little crap that personally should really consider getting a life.
If a spa forum gets their undies in a bundle that easily, then you gotta wonder how they react to things that really matter- like actual human to human interaction.
Although it's kinda fun watching their hissy fits.
They usually end in some overly dramatic departues scene, where the "victim" declares that they are taking their dolly and going home, and never coming back.
Big Whoop.
-
This forum is rated PG
Yea, now that I have Cooltoy and Why Not in check :D

They usually end in some overly dramatic departues scene, where the "victim" declares that they are taking their dolly and going home, and never coming back.
Big Whoop.
Its not a matter of sensitivity. It is a matter of treating people well. The internet provides a veil to hide behind, and it seems that this allows some people use that to treat others poorly. What about this forum is NOT "actual human to human interaction"? I was pretty sure we were all human here, but I'm starting to doubt that.
