New here, searched a bit and found nothing on this topic.
I am 23 and just want a spa. I have a spa now made by blue ridgethat has a crack in it. I tried to fix it with epoxy and resin and it still leaks. Also there is some wiring issues with the spa. Also needs a new cover. Basically a POS and im not going to dump any coin into it. I want a new spa or a low priced used spa that isnt going to need a bunch of shit.
I looked on ebay and found this
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Serenity-Spas-64Jet-12HP-Cayman-Spa-Hot-Tub-Tubs_W0QQitemZ230075500098QQihZ013QQcategoryZ42240QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
They seem to be selling between 2k and 2.5k
What makes this so affordable. Im sure later on ill want to upgrade but for now i just want a spa i can soak in after work. I got the POS i have now for free and the gfci spa panel is already set up and ready to go. I just need a nice spa to plug into it.
My budge is 2500 and i dont want to spend more than that. I can go a bit over but my house needs lots of remodeling and I cant justify spending much more than that on a luxury item right now. I am handy and can fix most things, if that matters.
-
I don't do much with Ebay. Is there a minimum bid? Currently the highest bid is $1300, way below cost.
They claim to be manufacturer. At that price they must be. Add $500+ for shipping. They are making money on shipping. Read the warranty. Weak.
No dealer support, but at the price you can buy it for who needs it?
Who knows how enery efficient it really is? They offer an insulation upgrade, indicating the standard insulation ain't gonna cut it.
All in all, if you are just looking for a tub to soak in, it might be a good deal.
Shop local dealers and see what they have to offer at an entry level.
-
I think a couple of adages appy here. "You get what you pay for", and "All spas eventually cost the same". I suspect that although this may be cheaper initially, it will eventually cost the same as a name brand from a dealer due to repairs not covered by warranty, increased electricity costs/poor insulation, etc. With your budget, and repair skills -- I'd be looking for a good used spa, both at dealers and in local papers/craigslist, etc. It may take awhile to find one, but they are out there.
-
You could get a Nordic in your budget, I believe.
-
I agree with Reese. Look used. It is amazing what you can find out there. My brother got a year old Jacuzzi 345 for either 2k or 2500 about 6 months ago. I looked for about a year before I found the right used tub for me. I'm in Socal and the Recycler and craigslist were my best resources. There was the occasional local tub on ebay as well. The thing with used is when they are in great shape and priced right they sell with in a day or 2 (at least here they do). So, figure out what you want, have your money ready and be ready to jump on something when you find it.
-
These tubs usally are weak in insulation. If you live in a cold climate and want to put and use this outside in the winter, your electric bill will go up higher than making a monthy payment on a better tub.
Is the cover included? I see that the lifter, steps O3 are not.
Yes, these are typcically low end spas that will need work, (heater, pumps, control panel, shoddy frame).
You get what you pay for. If you fully understand what you are getting into and are willing to haul it to the dump in a few years, then ok. I can understand that. You might be better served to wait and save, or buy used?
At 23 and fixing up your own home? That's fantastic. :)

Shaftslinger....if you are looking for a used tub......
Have you tried "CraigsList.com"?
There are some great hot tub deals on CraigsList.
The advantage of CraigsList is it is more of a local classified.
If you live in a CraigsList city then it has some major
advantages over e-bay concerning shipping.
Where do you live?

For someone that can't afford a new tub.....Look at some of these deals!:

Yea, I bought my house about 7 months ago. It was a bank owned foreclosure that sat empty for 3 yrs. Its a potentiall very nice home. 4 bedroom 1.75 bath. 1900 sq on just under an acre. I have a pond and a concrete basketball court. gravel driveway, go figure. when i moved in it needed bull dozed.
now it JUST needs haha
windows new gutters and eaves trim
the other half of the roof replaced (I replaced the back half in september with a friend 18 square)
paint inside the house
remodel the kitchen and large bathroom.
then i believe I ahve a 200k house on my hands. Paid 108 for it. neighbors house is 350k every day of the week but its a 4k sq with a pool other neighbor is 250 or so. I have nowhere to go but up.
I live in ohio, we have cold winters. Im not looking for a spa to last for years and years. Hell if i get 5 out of id be happy. especially at a price of around 2500/ thats 500 a yr plus maintenance.
the local spa store does have used spas starting @ 1295 but i havent been in to look at them. that same seller has an 83 jet 12 hp spa for bid of 2k right now that i can pick up. shouldnt go for much more than that. the others you get to pick the colors and options this one i just mentioned is already built so you dont get to chose anything. also i can pick this one up saving on shipping. The others youh ave to pay 600$ in shipping no local pickup allowed for some reason ( probably making some profit on that end.)
Im not terribly affraid of a larger electir bill. I expect aroudn a 30$ increase. If this thing is a POS and only insulated half as well i can even tolerate a 45$ increase because 15/month over the life of the spa is not enough money to make me chase a better unit.
I read the feedback rating of the company selling the spas and everyone is happy looks like hes sold very many of them in the last months. The people that did file a complaint were resolved, so it looks like the company does fix the problems.
anyone ever heard of this brand?
-
sorry forgot to add it will be outside and the cover is included, its there under specifications as locking cover.
-
Shaft, the house sounds sweet. Kinda of simillar to what I got into 7 years ago. Got 2 acreas surrounded by woods. There is nothing like it. My quality of life has sooooo changed. Gravel driveway...yup. Cost me $15000 to put a new one in, then the spa delivery folks messed it up. >:( I did windows 2 years ago. roof, paint, fireplaces...I could go on an on. I got about 100K into it, plus blood sweat and tears, I love it though. I trippled my equity in the 7 years. :)
When's the pool going in? ;)
$30 for electrical? I doubt it. $75 (well, I don't know, not with this winter here in MA). ;)
Don't be too fast to jump on the E-bay tubs. They are ALWAYS there and available. Trust me. I would though spend some time looking for a quality used tub, you may get lucky, but you will have to be paitent. YOu're not going to be able to put it on a pad, wire it, and fill it in Feb anyway, are you?
-
Its already wired up and ready to go now. Im going to just junk the one I have and put this one on the wood frame I have constructed. So im basically ready to buy today deliver tomorrow and soak on Friday.
Those used ones on craigslist are nice. That would be sweet if i could find one in cleveland or columbus with a gazebo. Ill have to deffinately check those out.
-
call around, just for grins. Your local dealers might have a great used tub for a sweet price (and ours offers something like 60 or 90 day warranty on the used ones). Are you looking for any specific size requirements? I haven't looked at the ebay link, and didn't see anything in type so far to indicate one way or the other...also, when you go to the grocery store, check the free ads people post....ya never know...
-
I'm at a loss here. You want a tub in the next 72 hours and are willing to drop about 3 large on a POS. (you know it's one too, ;) it's just a question of waiting for a good one, or buying this disposable one) It's tough to say "hey, go for it".
What's the problem with the existing POS? What would it cost to get soemout out there to get it running? I'm sure it would be a lot less than buying this ebay one. That way you have a tub to soak in with minimal money. Put the money you save aside for something you'll want to keep and have.

Deluxe Coleman cover. Spa has a small leak. Original price $5,000.
Selling hot tub and gazebo as a package for $2800.00
-
what it leaves out is "bring a truckload of friends to help, this is going to be a major PITA!" and if it's already got a "small leak", I can't imagine that it'll improve or not get worse with moving.... :-?
-
sorry tat, but id rather go with that tub with the gazabo, and tub then the POS one on ebay.
-
*LOL* to each his own....I'd personally view it as a horse apiece, but that's just me.
-
yea, i saw that one in cleveland with the small leak. I think im going to go with that one. I dont know much about fixing hot tubs but if its just a plumbing leak and its pvc I have worked with that tons of times.
THe old one i have can be considderd FUBAR it was cracked and patched before i got it. I moved it to my place and cracked it even worse in the process because im awsome. So then I repatech it with resin but it still leaked because the old patch wasnt cut out entirely. The cover for it was worthless and I threw it out. On top of that the guy I got it from was one of those "knew just enough" electrical guys and he switched it over to run on 110 from the 220 but did it the hill billy way. Not exactly sure what he did. I can get it to run and it heats and pumps but it keeps setting my GFCI breaker off which leads me to believe I may well electrocutre myself if i get in it. I think i could get it completely fixed with a new cover for about 900$ but then id have a POS with a huge crack/patch in it right by the stairs. Story o ntha one is he guy had 2 400+lb daughters. Use your imagination on how the crack was made.
So back to the one in cleveland with the room addition that you get with the tub haha. WHat do you guys think is leaking. Im a pretty good plumber copper PVC or any of the newer materials, I can work with all of it. is that whats under these things? Im sure I can get that forless than 2800 since its leaking.
-
The plumbing is all PVC.

I suppose Cincy may be too far....
But look at these on Cincy's CraigsList:
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/for/250111799.html
5-6 Person Jacuzzi Hot Tub/ Spa Great For Winter - $1600
have a beautiful Jacuzzi brand hot tub for sale. This thing is awesome for those achey and cramped muscles. It's gettig to be that time of year where things are cooling down and it is very enjoyable. We are selling because we need money more than we need the hot tub at this point. We are very upset about having to let it go we love this thing.
Ok now for the specifics. My dad bought this at an estate auction, july of 05 it had been kept next to an indoor pool since new. We now have it in our car port that is really nice because it's outside yet out of the weather. We stained the wood and put a new pump and seal in one of the two motors when we got it. This baby has a good cover with only a few tears and imperfections but does not affect it's purpose.
It is equipped with 2 loungers, a water fall, 3- stage light, built in step, and a digital thermostat. It is completely self contained all you need is a place to put it, water, and a 220V hook up and your ready to relax. This baby is very heavy and transportation is up to you. We brought it in on a large trailer and rolled it on conduit to where it is right now.

I just got a 2003 Hotspring Sovereign on craigslist for $700.00. :D The seller also included $$350.00 in supplies.

$700 for a Hot Spring Sovereign?
Whoaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Congrats mgtywarrior!
Ya done good!

I bought my 2005 Jetsetter off ebay...love it! I would say more, but when I talked about it on another forum, someone who also posts here jumped all over me because I said I got a good deal...and they apparently thought no tub is good unless bought new from a dealer. Hey, if I could have afforded a new one, I would have bought a new one.....but NOT a new one off ebay. My advice is too keep looking...the right one at the right price is out there for you! ;)

MLK:
I am surprised you allowed a mere salesperson to cower you. Go right ahead and trumpet your deal. I wanna know the dirty details and I am sure others do too. If there is a problem with "someone who also posts here", we can put together a posse and deal with the miscreant.
That "someone" needs to remember that almost all tubs originally resulted in a commission being paid to a salesperson when it was new. Plus I just love to hear about a good deal!

yeah Shaftslinger....keep watching Craigslist.....
I bet this time of year when the christmas credit card bills
are about to hit the mailboxes you might find a steal or two on
Craigslist or e-Bay for other great deals on used hot tubs.
"well honey...we haven't used the hot tub in months and
we could get 2 grand for it and help pay these bills!"

I picked up a 2002 HS Grandee in November for $1,000 out of the local paper. I replaced the heater, a $20 dollar hartford loop, and bought a new cover from doc. I think the price I paid increases the satisfaction I get from a good soak.
-
what repairs are there on these things that a DIYr thats very handy cant fix? I am very good with plumbing and decent with electrical. Does that just about cover it? So long as the thing hasnt been FUBAR i can pretty much replace anything and put it back together the way it was before i took it apart.
Pumps and heating elements are the big things that F up? what do these parts cost?
-

Full foam spas will be a pain if you have a leak back in the cabinet, or so I am told. However, people also tell me that the majority of leaks occur in the front equipment area, around the pumps and heater.
Have you given up on Ebay, and just looking now at the used tubs? ? I think a lot of folks here are very hesistent to say go the ebay route, but I'm wondering, if you know it's a crap shoot, and more than likely a tub on borrowed time, why not? (Cripes I'm wishy washy). ;)

Just yesterday I delivered a Grandee of about the same year as the one in the Craigslist ad.
I would have normally sold it for around $3000 plus tax. Normall, they go out with a new cover, a new or used Cover Cradle, new standard filters, new Moto Massage units, new circ pump (as a matter of policy we do all of those things on any used spa we sell), a subpanel, delivery and set up - plus we will have water tested it once or twice before it goes out, and we offer a one-year parts warranty on all new parts and a 90 warranty on the equipment.
The one we delivered yesterday went for less because the siding was ready for sanding and staining, and it had a very used cover. Also, it had needed only a new shaft seal and oring in one of the jet pumps - the rest was ready to go when we got it - and it went to a friend.
But it still went for more than the one on Craigslist... hmmm.
8-)
-
im still on the hunt. I guess im pretty much not looking at the new ebay tubs any more for now. I think i can just keep looking for a few weeks and find one in a classified or on craigslist for less than 1000 and maybe luck out. IM pretty much willing to drive up to 5 hours out to get it and ihave a truck and trailer so im flexible. A new requirement for me it has to be a big one cause i keep getting bigger/fatter and I have lotsa friedns that liket o soak in the tub too so we need a big one.
-
Shaftslinger,
I bought an ebay hot tub. Have had it for 2 yrs. and NO PROBLEMS!!!
Bluewater spas sells them on there. Had it custom made with the features I wanted and the color and cabinet. They do have customer support if there are any issues. Comes with cover. They have accessories also. (cover lifter, steps, etc.) I've been very pleased thus far! Saved some dough!

I see where you're going with this. Used as opposed to new. I'm very happy with the purchase. Brand new with warranty about $3600 with shipping.
-
$3600 for a brand new custom tub?
wow that looks like good deal Gobucks....
no I am not "goin anywhere" with this thread....
just showing slinger the kinds of deals out there....
new vs used I would think would be unique to each consumer
for some it might work...for others it would not
-
Im still on the hunt. Im pretty much willing to drive pretty far for the right deal. but its gotta be a smoking deal if im going to drive 400+ miles to get something. I sent an email about the hotsprings grande to see if its still available. I keep finding nice tubs for like 3-900 but seems they are sold before i get to them . So im going to keep trying. I can tough it out and work at it for a while till i get a smoking deal. I bet ill enjoy it alot more if i spend less than a G.

is that a good brand? I think the other is too small for me.

nevermind the 700 ls is sold. These things sell quick I wonder if i should sell my old one. The pump works and the heater works. jsut the shell is cracked. hmmmmm its a blue ridge. is it worth anything?
-
shaftslinger.....yes these "steals" will usually move very fast.
I would think if you are serious about saving thousands of dollars
and getting a very nice, excellent condition used hot tub in the
$500-$2500 range....you will have to check CraigsList often and
if you find the perfect used tub...you must be able to move fast
otherwise somebody is going to beat you to the seller.
Of course in reality you really don't have to be in a hurry
because more good deals and a few "steals" will appear again
and again.
Remember just because you miss a "steal" today doesn't mean
somebody won't be "in a bind" next week or next month.
You just have to be attentive because you never know when one
is going to pop up and if you decide you want it you'll have to move fast.
Many of these CraigsList sellers appear to be in some kind of bind....
could be space need, money need, divorce, ect....and they just wanna
get rid of the spa and are not as concerned about taking the hit...
they just "want it gone"....so they price it so low...that it will be gone
very quickly.
-
exactly. Ive made it a habbit to check all of the craigslist sites every morning when i wake up. I also do it at work occasinally. Ive never used craiglist before but that is an awsome site!!!

re: Ive never used craiglist before but that is an awsome site!!!
Shaftslinger.......Yes Craigslist.com is pretty awesome!
Especially for local used items that would be difficult to ship
via e-bay. (like hot tubs, furniture, ATV's, Jet Ski's, ...ect...)
Craigslist is also good if you are "in a hurry" for something
used and cheap....because you can go pick up the item the same
day as purchase as opposed to waiting on shipping via e-bay.
Not sure how CraigsList.com makes any money because it's free to run ads
and there are no banner ads......go figure.....but FREE is great.
I bet local newspaper classifieds hate CraigsList!.....LOL
Speaking of FREE....did you know that Craigslist also has a
"FREE STUFF" section and you can find all kinds of stuff people
are getting rid of for free.

I got one~!!!!!
got a hot springs classic 1995
has a leaking moto massage for 250
picking it up tomorrow. THey said that it leaks about 1 inch every 5 days.
SO now the qquestion is how tough is it going to be to fix it.
-
Someone on here fixed a moto massage leak in the last few months... If I remember correctly the most time consuming part was removing all the wet foam. I don't think it cost him much $$ at all to fix it either. I'll do a search and see if I can find the post.

Found it...
