Yesterday at work I cut a dime sized chunk out of my thumb on my right hand. It's almost a 1/4'' deep and hit a few small arteries. They call it an avulsion. It was pretty nasty. Between the blood loss and the 100+ degree heat I fainted but only for a few moments. Anyways, the doc said to keep it away from water and moisture for a few weeks while it heals, so no soaking for awhile. :( I also have to change the dressing twice a day. Kind of hard to do with one hand but luckily for me I have a neighbor who is a paramedic. :) I can only imagine what would have happened if I wasn't wearing my heavy duty rubber gloves. :o
Just thought I'd let you all know that I'll be around a little more than usual. If that's even possible. ;D

I hate when that happens! You can always soak with your hand over your head. ;)

If you don't mind me askin Chad, how did it happen? Bout 2 years ago,I was cutting an L or a rectangle out of porcelain, and I went to snap out the rest of the piece after cuttin on wet saw. Well my finger caught an edge of the porcelain, sliced it like a razor blade.
I was a 1 hand wonder at work,for like 2 weeks lol.
I'm on a 2 week vac roughly as,my daughter is in town.
Still semi-slow here in Sarasota FL.

Chad,
It's fortunate that your such a good one-handed typist. You probably never thought that skill would come in so handy! ;D ;D
Seriously, hope your not in too much pain. Wrap that hand up in a ziplock and some duct tape and get out in that tub!

We were working with an 18 x 18 porcelain tile set on a 45 and I was using my cutting board to score about a 4 inch triangle and then popping it with my hand. Usually works great and saves a lot of time going back and forth to the wet saw. Well one cut just wasn't wanting to pop, so I placed it on my mortar bucket and forcefully tried to snap it with my hand and with all my might it finally popped but not before taking part of my thumb with it. Duh! We really need to slow down a bit and maybe find a better cuttin board for these types of tiles then an oversized Rubi.

I'm finally gonna try and take a shower. Depending on how it goes I'll see about soakin.

Thanks Rich. It only hurts when changing the dressing. Any scab that has formed on my exposed tissue gets stuck to the gauze and has to be removed twice a day. It doesn't feel very good. Hopefully some skin starts to form soon so this doesn't have to happen any more.

Neosporin (sp?) helps the wound heal about twice as fast as without anything. Try it and you will be surprised. Almost like a magical way to grow skin.

I've been using it, thanks for lookin out as usual. :)

I bet if you had a wireless keyboard, you could type with your toes, Chad.... ::)
Seriously, Hope that thumb is starting to feel a bit better, I got chills when I read your post. I just had a decent hunk of skin cancer cut off my ear (enough to require a graph)
and the doctor told me not to let it form a scab, instead to do like Ndabunka said and keep it greasy. I use polysporin, but I am sure neosporin is just as effective.
Take care,
Boni

That's funny Boni.....I also use polysporin or bacatracin.....for some reason my mom was always ANTI-neosporin....I think it has something in it that the other two don't???? Not quite sure of the reason....never really asked!! :-/

Same here when I got a bad cut last year but after changing the bandage a couple times I got smart and combined the two. I used a very small amount of Neosporin on the bandage, just enough so it left a film between the bandage and my wound. This still allowed my wound to get air but the film of Neosporin stopped the wound from sticking to the bandage as it began to heal and scab over

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm gonna start changing the dressing 3 x a day instead of 2 in hopes of keeping the avulsion greasy. It's been 48 hours since the accident and the dressings are finally starting to come off a little easier. Hopefully I'll be able to go back to work on light duty by Monday. :)

Still semi-slow here in Sarasota FL.
We finally picked up the past month or so. This is our slowest year in the six years I've been doing tile/stone. We've brought in more revenue this past month than we did in the previous 4. I hope things stay up here and get up for you soon. Maybe after the election......

I dont know if it is available OTC, but Silver Sulfadiazine is the BEST topical for wounds! Ugh. I just checked, and it is Rx only.
Here's to a quick recovery!!! And to tubbing with a bag on your hand!!!!
-
I had 1 slow spell earlier this year, was off bout 2 weeks, and right now, which is going on almost a week. Right now it works out fine as,my daughter is in town.
The guy I'm subbin from,is shifting more towards commercial work as,new home construction is dryin up in this area. Commercial is fine by me as,I did it for years in a union setting.

New home construction is slowing all over.
The whole credit problem has people running for the hills. Even people with great credit are having problems.
Unfortunately, the McMansion phase has made the housing market a bust. People making $40,000/year can't afford a $500,000 home. At least that's what I see in NJ.

What's the status of the remodel?

It's gettin better, thanks for asking. :)
It's finally starting to fill in a little but it's still rather gross. For some reason every time I change the dressing I get light headed. :-/ I'm going back to work tomarrow on light duty to see what all I'll be capable of doing. It's going to be interesting as practically every thing I do deals with water and my right hand. We're soo busy right now that I really don't have a choice. Hope you get to soak soon b/c your temper is starting to scare me a little. ;)

Too true. I have a friend who makes 80K a year, has horrible credit, no savings, and is by far the worst manager of money I know and he qualified for a 350K interest only mortgage last fall. What the hell is wrong with these lendors.

What's the status of the remodel?
The remodel......I'm at my dad's mercy at the moment, waiting for him to be inspired enough to go from reviewing and critiquing my cabinet plans to actually BUILDING the suckers!!!!!! But the end result will be so much better than what I can get "out there" so it is worth the wait. But I'm going a little crazy.
As for getting light headed with bandage changes, try to pretend that it is not your finger. I know that sounds dumb, but just focus on the process of changing the bandage as if youre doing it for someone else. It will help a bit.

I guess you can't rush a perfectionist. I'm excited to see his craftsmanship when he finally does get things movin along. Keep us(me) updated and have you still been able to find time to soak in the spa? :)
Thanks, I'll try to pretend that it's your thumb. Oh wait, that won't work, I'll get light headed for another reason. :-*

Chad, I'm confused now. I thought it took someone else's TOE for you to get light-headed?! ;)

Chad,
With listening to CNBC and my own experience it has to do with mortgage brokers and typically not banks - at least in the initial stages. Some mortgage brokers are slime buckets IMO.
When I was buying this house, I had a good idea on how much I could afford and the bank I went to verified that I was at the 28% range of my salary (the place you want to be or lower). A mortgage broker told me I could borrow $250,000 more based on my salary which I knew was pure BS. I knew I would not be able to feed my family with that much more of a burden. All some of these people want is that commission check in their pocket when they sell the mortgage to another entity.
They find people who aren't up on their financial knowledge or don't look at a house as something that you shouldn't "just walk away" and give them anything they want.
We are feeling it now because of this. It's a shame as I think this may be the tip of the iceburg in the coming months.

I have two neighbors. One is a nice guy with a good family and was asking a reasonable amount for his 3400 sq ft. gold course home. The market has gone VERY south and he has since dropped the price by $50K (from $475K to $425K) in a short 6 month span. They are living in corporate housing until it sells. Yet there is another yo-yo who bought nearly the same house but he's not on the golf course and therefore (logically) he paid about $50K less. Now, the "utz" who paid less is asking (get this) $525K (over a hundred thou OVER the Better home) because he "says" that they invested in upgrades and they need AT LEAST $499K out of the house in order to "break even". I know for a FACT that he paid $298 for the house three years ago. He's even claiming on their real estate listing that they have put "over $200K into this home" when in reality they have simply mortgaged it to the hilt, had it re-appraised and borrowed more money on it and pocketed nearly the entire $200K. They now state that they have bought another property in Ohio and were to move out in a couple of weeks. The moving van was there and gone this past weekend. Pretty certain that they took the money they got form this house, used it for a down payment on the next house and are going to let this one go into foreclosure. And we wonder why the economy is SO screwed up? Old house in wifes name only. New house in husbands name only. Wife's credit will look like crap and the original mortgage guys will get a $375K house they loaned $499K on. Sad, really sad state that people think they can do this and get away with it.

He actually started cutting wood today!!!!!! Yippeeeeeee!!!!!!!!
I would soak in the spa more often if it would cool down a bit. It has been at least 4-5 days for me. Just not inspired.

Gee....that is sweet......I think? :-*
Hey Chad, maybe your should try to imagine that the finger you are rebandaging belongs to the CEO of Countrywide. But dont hurt yourself!

I remember seeing him on CNBC and he had this fake tan thing going on ... I knew he wasn't to be trusted! ;D
