Title: Help please....Jetsetter acting funny!
Post by: MostlyLurkingGal on January 03, 2007, 10:44:19 pm
Figures with my luck, this forum would be down the night I have a problem!
Anyway...here's the scoop:
There is a slight gurgling noise that I never heard before, and bubbles are coming up from the floor where the hot water enters. Term told me awhile back that I don't have an ozonator in a '95 Jetsetter....so it's not that (unless one was installed aftermarket and wasn't working until today) but I imagine if it did have an ozonator, this is what it would look like....bubbles coming up. This hasn't happened before in the 3 months I have owned it. There was even a "new" smell  when I opened the cover.  I'm not even sure how to get the panel door off....I took off 2 screws, but can't seem to get it open. Should I turn the power off until I figure out what it is? THIS is when I hate being single....this and car problems!!!

MLG, is the smell kind of sweet and are the bubbles really small?

yes and yes

It sounds like an ozonator, which could have been installed any time.  Why it has only started bubbling now is a mystery.

Don't worry about it.

There should be 4 screws to remove to get the door open.  Stick with it. :o

Sounds like you have an ozonator afterall. That's weird for it to just come on like that. Are bubbles constant or do they come and go? Can you hear something running when the main pumps and heater are off?

MLG, what a great X-mas gift. Maybe your ozone system was plugged and now came back to life. If it smells like fresh watermelon it's ozone. Get in the spa and take a light whiff.

Thanks guys....I'm a little concerned because this hasn't happened before. I will try tomorrow to get the panel off....not sure what I will do once it's off tho...lol
The gurgling (that I have never heard before) and the bubbles are constant right now.
The hot tub was very quiet until this started sometime today.
Chad, Normally when the main pumps are off...the heater is on, so I don't really know how to answer that. If it is an ozonator, is it suppose to gurgle??
Anyway, I have to hit the sack......I sure appreciate the help, and I will check this thread first thing in the morning!

MLG, you might want to clean out your ozone system.

Another trick is to add an enzyme product like Spa Perfect to the filter compartment with the jets off.

hottubdan, I'm assuming you're talking about adding an enzyme product to reduce the gurgling noise? How exactly does that work?

I will be getting a new Jetsetter at the end of the month.  Will it have an ozonator?  What exactly is an ozonator?

My understanding is sometimes the gurgling is related to the circ pump getting clogged.  Enzymes break up enough for a better flow.

Which style Jetsetter are you getting?  There is the Classic series which does not have an ozonator as standard equipment, and what we call the Luxury series which does.

I will let someone else explain what an ozonator is and what it does.

The description of a new bubble source, and a sweet smell certainly sounds like ozone.  Perhaps there was a clog in the delivery line that cleared itself.  The gurgling could be as simple as this new source of air collecting into large bubbles in the return line.  I seem to recall a thread about gurgling in HotSpring tubs way back in the archives.  I thought diverter valves were involved, but I don't really remember.  Perhaps a long search (700 days) on "gurgle" or the like would yield some results.

Shortspark is getting an '07 Luxury Jetsetter with standard Freshwater III Ozone.

The ozonator is a supplemental water care system that allows you to use very little chlorine in the spa and makes taking care of the spa a little bit easier.

Thanks Term.  I'll find out more about this thing next time I get to Longview as we may not have discussed it fully last time.

Well....I looked and lo and behold I have an ozonator!  ::)Go figure! I was barely getting the hang of what to do chemical-wize with no ozonator, and now I have to figure out what to do with one.... Do these things run 24/7?
Thanks for all the help you have given me!

Ozonators run when the spa is filtering. Since you have a spa with a circ pump that filters 24/7, you get ozone 24/7.

It should not significantly change what you are doing.

Did you see a brand or model name on the ozonator?

There are different types.  If you have a UV system, even if you are having bubbles you are probably not getting ozone.

It is a HotSprings one, but that's all I noticed. Don't be confusing me more with that UV thing!!!! ;D

okay, so you have the 'energizer bunny' style....keep doing the same as what you have done prior to now with sanitizer, etc....and watch your test strips (or taylor kit or whatever) to see what the difference is....you may get away with using a touch less sanitizer, but I believe that's about it?

Sounds right to me.

I will just do a tad less of what I have been doing, and see what happens. Thanks!
One of my problems with boards like this is that I think I get too much information...for example, I read up on ozone now that I apparently have it and am now a little worried about breathing in the fumes...my hot tub is on my porch, and I read somewhere that indoors is not that great for ozonators. Maybe too much information is not always a good thing? ;D

MLG, did you find out what type of unit was installed in your Jetsetter? Do you have a FWIII, FWII, or something else? There should be a label on the ozonator.

it's a FW but I didn't notice if it was a II or a III :-/

Was it a big black box or a small black box?

Still bubbles....still gurgling........

MLG,
I don't think you have anything to worry about, but the sudden appearance of bubbles that weren't there before is curious.

My 93 Prodigy bubbled and gurgled the entire 12 years I had it.  That was with a working ozonator and after I had removed it from the tub when it stopped working.  I kinda liked it and considered it my "water feature". :)
(My new Envoy bubbles, but doesn't gurgle)

Get it checked out just to know if you have an ozonator, and if it is working, but in my own (uninformed) opinion, I don't think you have a problem that could damage the tub in the immediate future.

Richs100, I looked and I DO have an ozonator.....apparently an aftermarket install as the 2005 didnt come with them. (I bought this tub from a private party) It just started all on it's own a couple of days ago. It concerned me at first because at the time I didn't even know there was one...and it was gurgling, where before it was perfectly silent....which was VERY nice. So I'm not really "concerned" anymore...just miss my silence when I sit with the jets off. No biggie tho!

MLG, the 2005 models did come with the FWIII--as an option. I'm sure that's what you have. I was thinking you had an older spa.

My tub's ozonator quit working after a few months of operation. I opened the side panel and looked at the box. I took the clear plastic hose off that had several loops and two plastic check valves in the line. I could see a yellowish gunk inside the line. I took the check valves off and flushed them  several times. I found that one of the little check valves was stuck and wouldn't open. After forcing water both ways it finally released and started working. Put the clean line and checks back on and watch the little bubbles coming from the opening at the bottom of the tub. The flow is much more now. And I can smell it. I read somewhere that the ozonator builds up a residue in the line after a period of time.
