Title: How much was your last Electric bill?
Post by: Gomboman on December 02, 2006, 12:13:16 am
The last time we did this was in the summer. I think Bonibelle and Brooke beat us all with huge electric bills. Mine was around $200 in the summer which I thought was high.

Our last electric bill for November was $92 for 605 kWh's. What was your last electric bill?

$275... I'm on vacation so I don't have the kwh.  The month before was $190.  Not sure what the difference was...

Mine has been 146 dollars for over a year now every single month. I have a full electric house and am on a monthly dual fuel budget plan.

(Dual Fuel) If you have an alrenate heat source to heat your house I.E. wood stove. The power company installs a control box at your panel. This box is radio controlled and allows the Power Company to turn off your heat at peak power times. For the home owner you get a reduced rate of .04 per KWH versus .07 here in Northern Minnesota. I don't even have a gas line ran to my house from the street.

Last month's bill with zero days of spa ownership was $50. My furnance is gas though, so my electric bill is much cheaper in the winter opposed to the summer when I have my electric a/c running. I should be getting my first full month of spa ownership bill any day now. I have been waiting anxiously to get it as I am very curious to see how much it really costs me to opperate.

Mine was $117.36 for 969 KWH in Nov.
By the way - I'm like Tileman, my furnace is gas so my electric is lower in the winter.

I also have gas heat, water, dryer, stove, etc.   My summer bills were around $450.

This month SoCal Edison is adding a .15 increase (when 100% over baseline) so my bills will be even higher.  They told me to expect $700 bills in summer.

We've had the spa a year and never noticed an increase in our bills.

Is this gas and electric combined? If not, how big is your house? :o

No.  But gas in the summer is nothing... maybe $20.  We just turned on the heat this week for the first time since last winter... the most gas got to last winter was $60.

Our house is a whopping 1227 sq ft.  We have a high efficient AC unit, all of the lightbulbs have been switched out to the energy efficient ones, we got rid of the 2nd fridge last summer, etc. etc.  The house has the original single pain windows, valuted ceilings throughout, and very little insulation.  Plus the 52" tv is almost always on, 2-3 computers are usually on at a time, and the kids are terrible with shutting off lights.

The most kwh we used last summer was about 1700.. Rates are just outrageous in CA.

Our houses are the same size except yours is probably worth 10x more than mine, as you're in CA and I'm in dreaded MO with the cows.
To give you an idea how inexpensive it is to live hear, my highest electric bill was $125. I guess if it was as expensive as CA, there would be no incentives to move here. :)

Oh btw, did you check out my g/f  :-* feet in "Am I weird?" today.

The bill arrived today and is for service from 10/22 to 11/25, so it's definetly a full month of spa ownership. 869 kwhs for $78.00. That's almost a dollar a day increase. I soaked 1 to 2 times everyday but 1. I'm very pleased with these results. :)

Here is my last year of usage...
As you can see our rates have gone up a lot, the 11/06 bill used 93kwh less than 11/05 and yet our bill was $55.49 more.

Month           kwh          days      use/day     Total Bill

8/17/2006       1600      29      55.17      $367.72
7/19/2006       1795      30      59.83      $428.96

1/19/2006        1167      31      37.65      $200.91
12/19/2005      1210      31      39.03      $197.29
11/18/2005      1327      31      42.81      $220.54

Chad, your gf feet are nice, but I prefer short toe nails.  I do wish I had the time to have such a nice pedicure though.

Brooke, I'm also in CA, but my highest  bills for the last 16 months were this last July (heat wave from hell) at $230 (my highest electric bill ever by a couple hundred KwH), and last December ($220). The furnace is gas and the A/C is electric. I think that is part of why my bills are not as outrageous as yours. 1300 square foot older house. We have reasonable insulation and I made both blackout curtains and regular drapes for the 10' wall of windows in my living room.

date                KwH             $$$$        Gas Therms      $$$$              Total
7/17/2006          1,243          $220.08          10.0          $10.05          $230.13
12/14/2005          587            $74.62           86.0           $146.36          $220.98

Comparing electricity use from most of '05 (no tub) to most of '06 (yes tub) it seems that I used about $15-25 more electricity each month this whole year. (This is a $$ due to USE not increased rates). I'd attribute that to the tub, and a little randomness.

Last month I paid $0.131/KwH, this month it was $0.144. Gas was $1.18/therm this month, and $1.12/therm last month. My gas rates seem to fluctuate more than my electric rates. In the last year they have been as low as $0.9 and as hight as $0.19

Brooke, looking at your bills, it seems that your energy rates are even higher than mine- approx $0.23/kwh. Where in CA are you? I'm in Sacramento

Anne,

We are in SoCal... about 90 M N of San Diego and say 45 SE of LA.  In the lovely Inland Empire...  :)

Who is your electric company?  We have Southern Callifornia Edison and the last time I called them (September) they said rates would go up in November .15kwh when over 100% which we always are.

Nice area! My boyfriend lived in Poway for a year, which meant lots of me flying down there to see him. Too much traffic for my blood, but the same thing is starting to happen here.

We have PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric). Perhaps our rates are going to go up a lot more too, but nothing has been announced.

We had a very hot summer, and if memory serves the avg temp was 110 in July.  The AC was running non stop.  Though we never go lower than 78 and most the time we try to keep it at 82.  Also, I am a SAHM with 2 kids, so we use the AC, TV, PCs, etc. during the day where as a lot of people are at work and don't.

LOL, at your choice of gifts...

Yeah, this summer was NUTS!!!!! We're pretty conservative about energy use, and often I cringe when neighbors' AC units come on late at night (just open windows and deal with it, already!!!!) but this july with day time highs of about 108-110 for a week or more, our AC was coming on 24/7.

Anne,

I hear ya on the window thing, but if you were like us this July... it was still too warm outside to even open the windows in the evening.  I know my bill is higher than my next door neighbors though because they have a 2 story house and will leave the upstair windows open at night.  We are single story and with having 2 small kids in the house I just can't do that.  It took me a year and half before I was able to leave the doggy door open.  That still makes me nervous, lol.

Totally off subject... my pm almost never works, so I'm going to hijack this for a second.  If I remember correctly Anne you are a vet... if that is correct, what do you think of mini dachshunds or maltese as a pet in homes with small children (2.5, 7)?  We also have a Dalmation we rescued 3 years ago and a 3 legged cat.   My inlaws had a mini dachshund puppy and my husband fell in love with it over the holiday.  He wants to get a small lap dog.  I've looked into the rescue groups in SoCal (no one has returned my emails yet) but from what I read I'm not sure they would let us adopt such a small dog with children over 11 in the home.  I want to make sure we get an animal that is a good fit for the entire family (including the dog and cat).  The kids did real well the mini for the week, pretty much ingored it.  Just curious what you think...

Hey, Brooke-

I think there are two different ways to look at that question. One perspective is small children injuring a little dog because they just dont know yet how to handle an animal, and the other issue is a dog's propensity to bite a child. If your kids can learn how to handle a little dog, then both malteses and doxies are great breeds. There are some issues with every breed, those breeds included, but for small dogs, I like both. Doxies are notoriously smart. Malteses are too, but perhaps less.....manipulative. As for safety, any dog, any breed can be either wonderful with kids or not, but certain dogs are more patient with kids than others. I'd trust the demeanor of most golden retrievers over the demeanor of most chihuahuas (just an example!!!!!! :-X), but if I child is going to be bitten by one or the other, obviously the retriever could do more damage if provoked.

Rescuing an adult dog over a puppy can have it's pros and cons. On the upside, if the dog has proven to be good with kids or cats or whatever, there is less unknown about its personality. It can be harder to predict the personality of a puppy. On the other hand, if you start with a puppy who is around your cat(s) and gentle kids from the start, then you influence what it will tolerate.

Good luck!!!

Ann I hate small dogs,
I use them to wash my car. Keep the belly up and it will not scratch the car.

It'll probably work best if you hold all four feet together like a handle, and use the dog's back as a rag. I'd recommend dogs with a full thick coat, like poodles or malteses for that job. If you expect to get more than one use per dog, try not to dunk them in the soapy water for too long, and dry them out well when you are done so they dont freeze into a dogsicle.

my house is 3,600 sq ft with mega windows everywhere:

upstairs is gas heat/electric air and gas stove/oven and gas hotwater heater .
Downstairs, heat is electric heat pump/electric air and electric stove/oven and gas hotwater heater.

I just got utility bill today, it was $100.22  I can't remember the kw.
Anyway, our 650 gal spa has increased out bill about $30.00.

* I have to say I keep the house fairly cool summer and winter.

Frank and Anne,

I think you'll find my book, ONE HUNDRED AND ONE USES FOR FLUFFY DOGS AROUND THE HOUSE very helpful.

A sneak preview...
1) Got a messy marvin alway spilling his milk?
insert a long handle into the puppys mouth for a quicker picker upper of messy spills on the floor.
2) Unsightly ceiling cob webs hard to reach?
position the dog on a long pole, lift it to the ceiling for automatic scratching away those unsightly ceiling cob webs.
3) Messy window grime spoiling your view?
who can resist the scrubtastic job they do with their tongue on sliding glass door.  Why your windows will sparkle!
If you have a lot of windows, I recommend a larger breed.

my house is 3500 sq feet on long island new york...we get billed every two months...my last bill was 3125 kwh @ .20a kwh my bill was 626.26...i have my hot tub since july, and maybe i'm crazy but my bill has gone up quite a bit....i would say around 75 a month...i lowered the filter cycles from 3x a day to once  day...and lowered the temp a little bit...honestly, i don't see the heater coming on that much...i have the d1 chairman II....i am going to see next months bill and then decide if i'm going to winterize it or not...btw..when i first got the tub i was in it everyday for approx. 45 minutes...now its around 3x a week for 20-30 minutes....should i be blaming the hot tub for higher bill, or could it be something else...thanks for input

I don't think your tub is the sole reason for your increased bill. I say this b/c I soak 1-2x a day, keep my temp at 102-103, and set it to cycle 3x a day for 30 minutes and my bill only increased $30/month. Your tub however is slightly bigger at 400 gal than mine at 336 gal but I don't think that would cause that much of a difference.

All kidding aside, if I spill something in the kitchen, it doesnt matter where in the house my dog is.......he comes running, and suddenly the clean up job is 90% done. Nice list, Bama, I'll have to keep those other ideas in mind.

my house is 3500 sq feet on long island new york...we get billed every two months...my last bill was 3125 kwh @ .20a kwh my bill was 626.26...i have my hot tub since july, and maybe i'm crazy but my bill has gone up quite a bit....i would say around 75 a month...i lowered the filter cycles from 3x a day to once  day...and lowered the temp a little bit...honestly, i don't see the heater coming on that much...i have the d1 chairman II....i am going to see next months bill and then decide if i'm going to winterize it or not...btw..when i first got the tub i was in it everyday for approx. 45 minutes...now its around 3x a week for 20-30 minutes....should i be blaming the hot tub for higher bill, or could it be something else...thanks for input

I have PG&E and one of the things you can do online is analyze bills and compare them to the previous month or corresponding month the previous year. It looks sort of like this:

7/17/2006 Bill Highlights
Impact Increase Energy Charges:       Your energy charges were $ 127.93 higher for this bill.
Impact Increase Electric Usage:       The change in your average electric usage per day caused a $ 52.00 increase for this bill.
Impact Increase Weather:       The weather increased your charges by $38.00 - $63.00.
Impact Increase Billing Period:       A longer billing period increased your Electric usage causing a $ 20.02 increase for this bill compared to the previous bill.
Impact Increase Billing Period:       A longer billing period increased your Gas usage causing a $ 1.37 increase for this bill compared to the previous bill.
Impact Decrease Gas Rate:       A change in your gas rate caused a $ 1.27 decrease in your bill this month.

You may see if your power company has something similar. I dont know how accurate their figures are, but it is something.

My house is about 1800 Sq ft, yours is 2x the size of mine and I used 755 KWH ... the bigger the house the more expensive to run, if you have a lot of electrical and electronic equipment it adds up quick.

I know my children will leave everything running as they leave a room. A 60 watt light bulb is 1/2 amp, leave 4 or six of them burning for a few hours a day ... 60 x 4 x3 (hours) x 30 = 21.6 KWH. People take all the little things for granted, add up 10 little things it becomes a big thing.

tileman,

I have Ameren UE.  We have right at 3600 square foot, and since replacing our central air unit 2 years ago, the highest electric bill I have ever seen was $260.00 this past August.  That was setting the AC on 68, running our swimming pool pump, hot tub, multiple 100 watt light bulbs and a 220volt mig welder for several hours.

Tileman,

We have Ameren UE.

I use Ameren UE's gas but not there electric as stated earlier. I might have to make the switch to them for both, if they allow it. Heck it would probably save me $30-40 a month. I think that's worth a phone call or two. ;)

Thanks,

hey guys here in upstate NY I used 2637 kilowatts @ .131 for a two month total of 345.45. This would be for the month of October and November. Live in a 1950 sq ft house with the washer and dryer running and the lights are usually on. Can't wait for the next bill as we just finished putting up the outside christmas lights. Just wondering does anybody know what it costs for a garage opener to run. I have two and they get a lot of use.

I got a bill yesterday for electric for about $190.  Month before it was $185, and has been right around the 170-250 range this year.. In summer my A/C runs almost constantly, but I am constantly improving the insulation in my house..

My gas bill used to run about 30 in summer and about 350 in winter.  I went to budget billing and its around 100 a month all year now.. little lower in summer and a little higher in winter.  I heat my garage which is not well insulated (garage door is not very good for insulation, couple holes in ceiling to attic space I need to cover).

I think I am paying about $30-40 more for the hot tub now that it is cold out, but I am not sure as I dont pay all that much attention to it.

House is about 2500 sq ft, but my brother just built a 4900 sq ft house and even with 2 complete furnace/AC units, his electric and gas is lower than mine.  He did spray in foam insulation in all the walls and it really seemed to help.  The house is 2 stories with a full basement.  In case anyone is wondering, the total cost on that house with the lot was about $450,000.  It is very nicely done, but not overboard.. didnt use granite for bathrooms up or down, just on main floor, brick only on front of house, tile and carpet, no hardwood floors, no excessive appliances, but good ones, etc.  Housing here in Montana has gotten expensive, but still nothing like the bigger cities..  My 30 year old 2500 sq foot house cost me 117k 5 years ago, and with improvements is worth maybe 170k right now.  Dunno how good of a reference point that is for housing cost comparison.  On some real-estate type shows on TLC and HGTV I see houses in California going for 1.5 mil that are not nearly as nice as what my brother built this summer, and see houses like mine for over 400k.. But I dont know those areas so I have no point of reference.

I guess my point is that once you spend a million on a house in an already expensive area, who cares if the power is 100 dollars more per month than here.. ?  Its all relative.. I would be surprised if my neighbor was paying 200 more per month than me, but not someone in California or New York.

The bill arrived today and is for service from 10/22 to 11/25, so it's definetly a full month of spa ownership. 869 kwhs for $78.00. That's almost a dollar a day increase. I soaked 1 to 2 times everyday but 1. I'm very pleased with these results. :)

I got my second electric bill since getting my tub and I'm very pleased with the results.
It was for the service from 11/25-12/20. I probably averaged 1 soak a day for 20 minutes during this time. I used 629 kwhs for a cost of $59.00. That's 260 kwhs's less than last month and almost $20 cheaper! Last years bill for this time was almost identical. Granted I have been alot more careful with my energy consumption since getting my tub but I'd be hardpressed to think that my spa costs me any more than $15-20 a month.  :)

Where do you live and what kind of temperatures are we talking about. I am envious of your electric bill.

I live in St. Louis, MO.  I'd say the highs were no higher than the upper 40s and the lows anywhere from the 10s all the way to the 30s. These are all Farenheit degrees.
I keep my tub between 102-103 and I have an electric furnace. The temps did start to get a little warmer towards the end of the month but not that much.
Here is a link to St. Louis's average temps year round http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:USMO0787
