Title: Live hottub cam
Post by: galen on November 14, 2006, 07:30:41 pm
Well, I finally got the tub cam on. Its easy to view. Just click on the login button. you don't have to click the behind firewall box unless you want to. If you don't have the latest and greatest IE it will ask if its ok to load the active X plugin. This is my personal server so you don't have to worry about software. Once you have video, its best to leave the resolution at 360x243. Then if you want a bigger picture just click the extension box from x1 to x2 and that will double the size of the picture. Remember, its totally dark in my backyard, so your seeing a IR picture. When the sun comes up tomorrow it will be color. My daughter and friend are getting in tonight.   Heres the link  http://72.129.165.146/login.ml

Galen, that's really cool. 8-)
I think I just saw you walk outside and talk with the girls in your tub.
Did you wave to us as you were walking back in?

My husband would be in sooooo much trouble if he installed a webcam on the hot tub.  Some things are just not meant to be seen on the net and my tub activites are one of them.   :)

galen,
The cam looks great. It's a breezy night in your neighborhood.

What brand and model are you using? I'm not too happy with mine. I've got a Linksys Internet WVC200 camera that supposedly is sensitive to IR but when the sun goes down, you see nothing. How is it during the day? Do the colors render correctly? All foliage on my camera appears as a pinkish purple. I had Linksys replace it but the replacement also has the same problem. Linksys' Forum indicates many of us have this problem.
I have an ongoing rant with Linksys about it but complaints fall on deaf ears. It would be nice to hear a success story.

Phil

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was going to get a linksys but I read the reviews and didn't like what I was reading. Linksys should take that camera off the market. The system I have is independant of the two, one being the web server and the other being the camera. I can use any camera I want.  The web server is just that. It servs up what you connect to it. I can connect up to 6 camera but you then cut the refresh rat in half each time to add a camera. so two cameras would have a frame per second of 15 one would be 30 and 6 -would 5 frames a second. Next month I'll connect a pan tilt zoom camera with a 23X zoom lens. You will be able to see the deer on my neighbors farm.

When I bought my camera, there were only a few reviews out and they tended to be positive. Oh well. It does have a built-in web server which is nice and I use DynDNS.com so others can access it from the internet. Originally used Linksys' Sololink dns service but that stopped working for no apparent reason and tech support played dumb. Linksys is going downhill fast.

You have my curiosity up! What is the make and model of the camera?

Phil

NE-Phill since this is not tub related  (the cam is pointed at a hottub) why don't you pm me. And I'll tell you all about it.

Someone stole the tub and replaced it with bird feeders, a grill and some patio furniture.

No, it's there, hiding behind the patio furniture. It might be wearing camo!  ;D

Â  My wife would shoot me if I did anything like that!! I know you could shut it off if you want privacy but with my luck I would forget and everyone could see the activities.  :o ::) ;D

And.......what's the purpose for having a camera on your hot tub?  Not sure I get what the purpose is.

Stemay, There are several reason for the cam. Not only because there is a hottub. I'm gone from my home so this is a way to keep an eye on my property, I like wild birds, deer whatever walks into the picture,  and I sell commercial security equipment. This format demo's some of my products to my customers. A picture is worth a thousand words. My business doesn't have broadband, so I set up some products at home.  Enjoy.

galen, the picture looked balck and white now it seems to be more colour.  Is that a live feed or is there a delay.  It switched almost like someone turned a light on, it was that quick.

actually this is pretty cool.  The bird feeder closest to the camera has a ton of birds on it right now.

LOL, yeah we thought about that as a way to get out of debt and make extra money, but some how I ended up with morals and that inner voice was screaming that this was not acceptable means to do that.  Plus  I really don't want anything up anywhere that can come back and hurt me years later (I mean what if I want to run for President or something).

Thats the propane guy. I keep telling him that the tanks are outside! My wife says he has to always check the hot water tank. If he gets in the tub, I'm going to be mad. :-[

Pretty cool stuff.

I've used a webcam for years.  It came in really handy a few years back when I was having some contruction work done on my house.  I could watch what was going on while I was at work.  It actually caught one of the construction guys going through my desk, playing with my gun and stealing some stuff.  I called the construction company owner and the police to give them the URL so they could watch the action.  The thief lost his job and it made the job for the local police pretty easy too.

I used to have my web came setup when I worked at a downtown univeristy that let all of its IT staff over 40 go one day.

I could put it back up on the illegal's house accross the street and people could report any new "immigrants"  ;)

Aha! Now I understand what the purpose is!  Makes sense.  By the way, Galen....are you also a massage therapist?  Someone with he same user name posts on a massage therapist's message board.

NOOOO! I'm about as far away from that as anyone could be. I pee in the yard, drive heavy equipment, fish and hunt.  My sister-in-law is a chiropractor, she comes over and gives us a massage. We do have one of those chairs (Human touch). Sold at Sharper Image. That gets us by. My wife and I both have back problems. One reason for the tub. The tub is limited, the chair completes our daily workout.  (http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6052/chairma8.jpg )

I had a web cam set up, but the neighbors complained.

I guess I should have asked her permission first.   :(

Hey, Bosco :) Glad you liked the tubbin. Had two more but they said tomorrow night we will have a tub full. You caught me short cutting.  ;)I could mount another cam closer but I don't know if I want you to have a front row seat.  ;) How's it look up there in Canada? Is the video very choppy?

its a little choppy, you look like you are floating when you walk.  You dog would be in the shot and disapear from the shot. I guess there is a slight delay.

If you put 4 women in the tub, I want the camera moved closer forsure!!!!

And the birds just seem to materialize at the feeder!  POOF!  There's a sparrow. ;D
Fun idea, Mr. Exhibitionist.

In the early days of webcams, a buddy of mine thought it would be a great gag to set up a camera pointed at his kitchen sink - called it the dish-cam. It was a huge hit.  Peple started placing online bets over how tall the pile of dirty dishes would get before he eventually washed them.
We'll all be monitoring your maintenance! ::)

Well, I'm glad you are enjoying the live feed. I know that some might want to see something risqué but that's not the intent. My wife did get in one night naked, but forgot the cam was on. You never know what might be seen. There is a live trap for the raccoons that eat the seed the birds waste. The cage is in front of the grill. I caught 22 last year! Our little puppy has been caught twice in the last few days. This Monday morning we had a few deer very close to the trees but just out of view. The buck had only one antler. I will be changing the view from time to time. Soon, I will be moving the web cam to my web site. Thanks for all the positive email.
