This is the poor injured Kentucky Derby winning horse, Barbaro. I thought is was interesting that they used a warm water bath to allow him to wake from his surgery. Apparently the warm water had not only a calming effect, but allowed him to thrash about and not cause any damage to his reconstructed back leg.
I was amazed...and as an animal lover, grateful that the owers are willing to do whatever it takes to keep this beautiful horse alive!

There probaby is also buoyancy as a factor as the tub prevents full weight from being placed on the leg.

I expect the motives are not driven so much by a love of animals, but by the anticipated 40k to 100k stud fee.
Nice work, if you can get it.

yeah, if he was not a winner, he'd be.....gone....now. But I have seen people willing to spend $500 on a $10 rat, and people mortgage their house to send their dog to UC Davis.
There is plenty of love and compassion out there, but not at the racetrack!!! Cool Pic, though.

Bingo. This is a business, after all.
Look what happens to Greyhound's after they outlive their usefuleness at the racetracks.

From what I've read, the stud thing is all but out of the question.
Not that I'm an expert but, that stud would need to rear up on his hind legs and .......... I'll be right back. ::)
Sorry..........To much pressure on the injured leg. Let's leave it at that. ::)

Would we have to move this thread then?

I have a customer who is part of a rescue organization trying to help get the dogs into loving homes. She adopted one. The dog is ultra mellow. According to her, the dogs make good pets and have many years left to live.

I am not so sure....I read yesterday that the owner hoped that he would be able to living a happy life making as she put it...."little Barbaro's"

I believe they can artificially inseminate.

I was talking about me. ;D ;D
Seriously, I hope you're right Mendo. I did not hear the latest on Barbaro. Being an animal lover I'd hate to see him or any other animal destroyed.

What have you got against corned beef hash?

Hey my wife is going to Seminary - what are you saying?
>:(

If this is another attack on my spelling! Well, the consequences are too terrible to list.
-
OK,...the owners of this horse are not typical track people..and yes Barbaro would be valuable as a stud, but if you read any of the articles about the horse, and it's owners, you will find that these people would have attemped to save the horse even if he were a gelding. The comments about little Barbaros is the hope that the horse would heal well enough to be a stud.
I think there are probably other factors...like the damage to the Sport of Kings...after the public witnessed the horror of the injury. Also, The University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center is a renowned large animal hospital and complicated bone injuries are a speciality...which is why they have a horsie hot tub!
I guess I am particularly interested as this is all happening in my "backyard" and I love to know miracles do happen...even for animals! ;)
-
Bonni,
I agree with you about the owners and wanting to try and save the horse....I think the hope for the horse and its stud value is wonderful for both the horse and its owners.....you know like a good spa deal.....win win for all..... ;)
-
And Anne, I am one of the nuts who is willing to do what it takes to make my critters better...My husband is still not over the box turtle that I found on the road...It needed a vitamin A shot and antibiotic shots for 2 weeks. Herp and reptile docs are not cheap..Almost $200.00 later, she is a healthy beauty ...my contribution to Mother Nature ;)

That horse is on it's way to France for fricasseein' as it is a delicacy to the Frogs. The picture they WANT you to believe is that it is being cared for by all concerned.......it is actually being marinated in peanut oil.

Dont let him get to you, Boni- he's just chuckling at his computer, feet kicked up with a beer in hand devising ways to irritate you. (Am I wrong? ;D)
And Greyhounds do make excellent pets. There are a ton of them up for adoption as retired or failed racers. They're smart, not at all hyper, loving and devoted. Unfortunately, a lot of them get euthanized, since they become not financially valuable.
And AI is widely used for horses. I'm not an equine person, but I think that sometimes AI is prefered over the "natural" way to avoid injury to either party. Poor horsies. :-/

I believe the correct name for the steak sauce is A1.

I have several friends who raise horses and they all A.I.
Not much fun for the horse because the method they use to collect the goodies involves an electric prod. :o
-
Hear that Term...keep messin' with the horses and you're getting the prod...electric prod, no less!..that goes for you too LtDan.. (no disrespect intended, sir) ;)

I'm scared, yet somehow....curious....
