Well I joined a gym this week and started working out. I decided it was time to get serious about losing that baby weight,(my baby turns 16 in two weeks ::))
I'm sore in places I didn't know I had. My favorite time of the day is when I can finally get into my spa. I was so sore yesterday that I spent an hour in the spa with the jets on high the whole time. No doubt in my mind I would have bown this off after the first day of sore muscles if I didn't have my hottub to sit in everynight.

The therapeutic benefits of hot water are truly amazing!
What type of workout regimen are you currently performing? The reason I ask is that I have a sibling who is a personal trainer and the program they use is called Super Slow. It is a resistance based workout that only requires two 20 minute sessions per week. Many busy professionals find it to be the ideal way to accomplish their physical goals in a concise fashion.
If there is a Super Slow fitness center near you, I would sweetly suggest that you consider trying them. :)
It might also provide a networking opportunity for your company.
Pumped up wishes and buns of steel dreams....

spahappy,
I hear you loud and clear! I practice karate about 3 times a week and my hot tub really helps those sore muscles. Doesn't do much though for the bruises I get after sparring! ;D
I made it a point to use the tub 2 or 3 times a day for a week after my last few karate tests (received my shodan last October) and it made a world of difference. My recovery time was shortened by at least half.
Yes, soaking is good for you!

Thanks Spa Fairy, we don't have a Super Slow fitness center here just a regular gym.
I'm on the 5:30 AM, 5 days a week, Super Sore program with three of my best friends. Believe me there is networking going on, we sound like a gaggle of geese every morning.
It's been fun, we've decided that if one of us doesn't show up in the morning they have to pay $3.00 into a kitty. Thats a gallon of gas!!!

After an intense windsurfing session, there's nothing better than a vigorous massage in hot water....except maybe a vigorous massage in hot water with a martini! It really does make a big difference in recovery time....especially for us old farts.... 8)

Being an old fart, I can forget a lot of stuff but NEVER forget a martini! Maybe that's why I can't remember the rest..... ;D

Sore muscles from working out is one reason I like our tub and its open seating. It allows you to get the right spot against the places that need it.

My kids are on a basketball kick, which figures since it is baseball season...Anyway, they have pestered my husband to death to play EVERY night. I know it would be killing him if not for his nightly soak...and he readily admitted it. He prefers a glass of Merlot, while listening to Andrea Bocelli to really relax and relieve the pain in his tired old body! ;D

Who's Andrea Bocelli? I thought he was a Formula 1 driver. ???

This guy has the most phenominal voice I have ever heard. Last Valentines day, the kids and I planned a special dinner for my hubby, prime rib and snow crab, candle light, a nice wine... He was so shocked when he walked in...but the real treat was yet to come because when we all went out into the hot tub after dinner, I had Andrea Bocelli's - Amore album playing...That was the topper...If you really haven't experienced "him", give it a try...Especially wonderful after a good Italian meal, under a full moon ;D
I guess you know you're getting old when you trade your rock in for classical music! (but only on weekdays!) ;)

About 8 years ago, I was studing Kung Fu and loved it. My instructor was intense and I was a big kid. I wished back then I had a tub especially when learning how to break fall on concrete with old straw mats. We sparred full contact with limited power and there were many nights that I was achy.
I ended my "carreer" after my second accident while sparring - a black belt hit me in the chin with an uppercut a little too hard. My first was a ridge hand to the bridge of my nose and my instructer saying something about if the nose bleed doesn't stop get to the hospital. I decided earning money to pay for family needs out weighed being a big kid.
I must say I do miss it even after all these years.
Neither of my injuries could have been helped by my tub ... I couldn't have held my breath long enough for the water to heal.
-
Don't underestimate the power of the spa to help those bruises. With all the muscles relaxed, circulation is better and when circulation is better, bruises heal faster.

I tend to think must faster than I type. The corrected version is there now. It still could be taken dirty, if you want to, but its clearer now.
-
I thought the other version was better!!!lol

Agreed, hot water and jet therapy is SOOOOO rewarding after exercise. I do latin/ballroom/swing dancing and it is really a whole bodywork out, even if it sounds "sissy" to some. For anyone looking for a social and athletic activity, I know a lot of people who have lost a lot of weight just starting social dance, not even performace/competition stuff like I'm into. Great way to meet people, or spend time with your significant other. :)

His name is Andrea and he's a guy?!!
Crikey!
Slim Whitman is the master of soothing music. He and Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute. No others come close.

I go to fight class Mondays and Thursdays (my brother teaches it) and we beat the crap out of each other with hands, feet, sticks, and training knives. It is serious dirty fighting, no katas, forms, bowing, chanting, or "sport" rules.
I'm getting too old for this stuff, but I truly do enjoy it. I ESPECIALLY enjoy getting in the spa afterwards as there is nothing else in the world that will help you feel better after getting thumped awhile.

I'm pretty fortunate. No major injuries. In fact, I'm amazed how safe it is in our class compared to other athletic activities. I practice a Japanese style of karate derived from Kyokushinkai and it's intense a good deal of the time. Safety is emphasized at all times, of course and we do a lot of warmup activities to avoid pulling muscles, etc.
I've been at it since the beginning of 2002 and wish I started it 30 years ago. Before that, I was a safe proclaimed couch potato. I have to admit at my age (52), it is frustrating that any improvement I gain is minimal but hey, I'm enjoying myself, I'm staying active for the first time in my life and I get to train with a great group of people. I refer to them as my karate family.
Just to keep this hot tub related, I even invite them to use my tub after their tests or an especially gruelling class! ;D

Although I learned Katas and it was a more traditional martial art, we did a heck of a lot of fighting. I never got to the point of weapons which would have happened at my next rank. No, we didn't use them on ourselves but learned Kata using them. I was going to study escrima sticks then bo staff the following rank.
I've never been in a real fight but we trained somewhat realisticly One of the things that I was able to do towards the end is control the amount of energy expended and go with the punches/kicks. It is amazing how tired one becomes flailing about with arms and legs and not do damage.
The problem comes when you get hurt, I was hurt twice and I saw others get hurt. Since it wasn't my dream to be a Kung Fu Master ( I wanted to play and be a big kid) I figured it was time to quit.
But man, I wish I had the tub back then ...
-
Cold, damp days were the catalyst for my hot tub purchase. In '98 had a lady try to "beat me" thru an intersection when running lights & siren (we tied). Broke 3 ribs, collar bone, pelvis in three places and got a ride in a helicopter. The hot tub is the best medicine in the world that I've found.
I can say two things that are fact for me:
1. I'll never be without a hot tub
2. If anyone goes to put another chest tube in me they'd better have taken my gun, knives and backup gun from me first.
-
The friend who really encouraged us to get a tub was (still is, on occasion) a Motocross racer. He has had many accidents and many broken bones. He swears that the hot tub is what allows him to function. He has a landscaping and hardscaping business and for all that he has been through, he does exceptionally well....he says because he soaks faithfully every morning and every night! ;)

wife and i joined a gym in september after we quit smoking. between those workouts, running, yard work and golf, the hot tub is welcome relief.
i started out liking the 96-98 degree water, but i can't wait to get in the 101 tonight.
after a long day, it is the happy hour i look forward to.

I have used my spa (whichever one I had at the time) regularly for the past 20 years. I competed in Judo Tournaments here and internationally for over 25 years. I was last on the Olympic points roster a few years ago at age 37. Now my body is paying the price. Thank goodness for my Marquis Epic!
-
Actually I use my spa on occasion before excercise. On Curling nights, I soak before hand and it is much easier to stretch and loosen up. And of course after 3-4 hours of being in 45 degree dry air, an after soak is required.

anyone ever try a cold dip after a hard workout ? I think it was mentioned on this site about some the pro football teams having several tubs, some cool and some hot. The closest i've done is, work out - pool 70*- hot tub 100 and back a forth several times. My recovery time was much faster and muscles were less sore. I also remember my basketball days and sprained ankles. The trainer would always have me soak it in ice water followed by a hot soak and alternate several times. I think in general the cold reduces the swelling and the bodys release fluids that cause swelling then the hot increases the blood flow to promote healing. Some expert please chime in.

I use to belong to a gym that had an ice pool. It was about the size of a one person spa, perhaps 48" in diameter and maybe 36" deep, they kept it around 40F I was told. I tend to get inflamation in my shoulders and there are times it would feel good. 5 seconds in there and the pool then felt great.

It's weird, I have arthritis in my back, neck and hands, probably the result of Lyme disease. The tub has been fantastic for my back and neck, but my finger joints are still swolen and painful. I found by accident that they feel so much better and work better in a cold soak. I was actually washing gravel for my fish tanks in the winter. The well water was in the 40's and the gravel felt like little pieces of ice, but my fingers felt great! :-/

Ice (cold water, etc.) is typically recommened therapy immediately after working out and trauma. It does help with the swelling (and numbs the pain).
However, warmer temperatures help relax the muscle and are usually prescribed as treatment a day or two after the inury and/or as a way to alleviate some of the soreness.
I think most will agree that warm treatment is more pleasant than ice baths and ice packs, but i too enjoy "shock" treatments. Going immediately from warm temps to cold temps (sauna/spa to pool).

Hi Zz,
I was just thinking about you the other day! Glad to see you're still lurking. You should pop in more often...
