Ok, I don't know if this is a rare problem or not, but snails are slipping under my cover (even when latched shut) and pooping all along the edge of the tub and occasionally in it. This is nasty! Any ideas?

Thanks... I'll be sure to try that this weekend. ;)

I think you should place the snails on a bed of cornmeal for a day or two to clean them out before cooking them.
Othewise, get a pet crow. They love those things.

Ducks will eat em up too.

Thanks for all the help guys. I wouldn't know what I would do without you. ;D

Yes, and the Ducks will only poop in the tub while the lid is up.

ROTFL!
Seriously Brook, how about Home Depot for some snail poison that you would sprinkle around the base of your spa. I forgot about those nasty little devils you have out west. Here in Florida we only have poisonous snakes and skeeters that care plagues of one form and another to contend with for spa happiness.
Regards,
Bill

Hi Brookenstein
Just wondering how you know the poop is getting in the water. Does't the 24/7 100% no bypass filtration take care of it. (feel like I'm sticking my head out of the fox hole here)

Actually the filtration I believe is taking care of it ... its not like there are floaters in the tub (but that doesn't make it any less nasty)... but there are some poop spots on the edge as well as trails where the poop once was. I dunno where the poop went, lol.

I've heard of people putting a copper perimeter around the spa, supposedly that will keep them out.

Brooke, the slug and snail bait is usually pretty nasty and you would have to be careful around the children. I would try to remove all the snails that you can and then try a ring of salt around the base of the tub. I know it is effective for killing slugs that we get here and I think if the snails creep over it, the salt will dehydrate them and they will die. We also put little capfuls of beer out and the slugs are attracted to it. You would have to put more salt out after a rain and it can kill your grass if you get enough on it so be careful.

I hear if you line the perimeter of the spa with cloves of garlic it'll keep tehm away. ;)

Buy DE filter medium and sprinkle it around the tub. The DE scapes the bottom of the snails so they stay away.
This is what I've read.

Putting beer around the hot tub would most likely result in the snails being replaced by forum members.
Some may come from as far away as Texas if you use Shiner Bock.

Hey Bill, don't forget about those nasty no-seeums when the wind isn't blowing.....krykee....they'll carry you off even when in the tub up here on the coast in N. FL... :'(

Good one. Better put your head back down before you get a snail thrown at you. ;)

Sounds like I'm going to have to update my "Not HotSpring filtration" diagram.
Just think if you had one of the spas with lesser filtration like some of the folks on here sell. Then all that snail squat would just keep right on recirculating in their spa water, except for all of it that gets sucked into their pumps, heater, plumbing, and shot back out through their jets. Uggghh!!!

In Costa Rica, I travelled to the natural hot springs (heated by volcanoes) and they had seveal pools that went up to 106 degrees. It was beautiful. After a long day of horseback riding and hiking, taking a mudbath and a steam to sit in the naturall hot springs in the milddle of a pristine jungle....monkeys swinging in the trees above. Parrots squaking, sipping on a cold cervaza....the gentle sound of water tinkling from the trees...plop.....WTF? Ewwwwww.
The monkeys took great delight in peeing and pooping on the guests in the hot baths.
So Brook, keep your monkey away from the tub. If you think you got problems now....

HotSpring Spas offered by Watkins Mfg. will also reach 106 degrees plus. :)
And, they will filter 100% of monkey squat and squirt. ;D
I don't know any other brands that can make that claim.

I went to visit the folks in Florida for Christmas(I know, hard to believe from Michigan would retire to Florida) and this little bugger chased me around the yard for a while!!

I think I'll have to push my HS to 106 this weekend and see what kind of difference it makes. We usually hang around 104 but have not gone beyond that temp yet......
