Title: took the plunge
Post by: TN__HOT_TUB on March 24, 2006, 07:57:55 pm
Well folks, we did the wet test.

We placed our order and made a down payment.  4 weeks and counting.

We ended up ordering the Artesian Island Grand Cayman with 32 jets.  It's not the top of the line model, but I somehow think we'll manage.  :D

Thanks CappyKat.  Now all I need is that phone number of the folks that helped you with your patio.  My wife loves your patio (so do I, but my back and budget hurt just thinking about tackling a job that large  :D)

I'll spend the next couple of weeks working up some sore muscles building our patio.  The new tub will be needed tremendously.

Now if i can just figure out all this chemical stuff.  We got the ozonator...i'm told this helps to reduce the amount of chemicals needed.

I feel your pain (literally, even)...building the decking/patio for the tub is rough, but if you can DIY, it's WELL worth the savings, and the satisfaction of a job well done.
As far as the ozonator cutting down on the chemical amounts, from what I read, YES they do....however, don't expect that 90% drop like some sites tout....I don't know the exact amount, but every little bit helps, IMHO. I don't want to soak in heavy chemicals either...

Congrats on your purchase, and best of luck building your "perfect patio"!

Congrats TN!  I'm sure you are going to love the tub.

Great to run across another Volunteer.  I was born and raised in Chattanooga, just down the road from you.

Here is what I've done so far.   I think I might dig out the rest of the grassy area and put in a brick patio (if for no other reason than I'll reduce the amount of grass I have to mow).

Congrats on the tub, always nice to have another Artesian owner. Eight more and you, me , Vinny, and NJ Dave can challenge Term and the Hot Springs crew go a game of football  ;D. ;D

Congrats on your new tub.

It looks like you are off to a good start.  I would encourage you to go a bit bigger for the pad,if it's feasable.  This provides a walk area to move around the tub (Cleaning the tub, or cleanup around the tub.   I placed my tub on a pad that was just slight larger than the tub, and i noticed the grass is getting worn and trampled in the areas around the tub.

This photo was taken last week.  I've already thought about the walkway thing and have excavated more sod since this photo was taken(and will probably keep expanding).

That garden hose may be the boundary for the new patio. I'm considering knocking down those shrubs to the left and building the patio all the way out to the door on the left.

Wife wants a new deck to go with new patio (imagine that).

Why didn't you guys warn me that the price of the actual tub is only half the cost once you factor in all the new deck/patio work you'll want to do???  :)

You never would've believed it....I figured the tub would be the EXPENSIVE part...and it is, but the electric's not cheap, the deck isn't either...oh, and don't forget landscaping around the tub!   ::) Yikes....this crap never ends.....lol....but it IS kinda fun to completely alter a small corner of the yard to what amounts to a tropical retreat in summer, IMHO.

Feelin' your pain. But as long is does not take food off the table, or ruin your credit, or prevent house payments, I figure that EVERY big project will cost 25-50% more than I anticipate, and try not to stress over it. I want to enjoy not only the end result, but the project as it develops.

Good luck! And if you are doing most of the deck/patio/landscaping yourself, think of the money you are saving!!!!!!

No stress, I'm just making an observation.  I'm pretty wise with my money.  I'd certainly hire somebody if I felt i couldn't handle it, but its not going to be that difficult, just a bunch of manual labor.

Besides, I want to be good and sore for when that tub gets here....i might even sleep out there the first night.

I'm right there with you. Now that the tub is in place, and running, I'm eager to move flagstone! And there is satisfaction in doing as much on your own as you can. I'm even learning some basic plumbing skills. The electrical, well I was not up for that, obviously, but the rest, as you said, is just labor. And fun in its own way.

I know that i had better get my patio completed before the tub gets here.  Once the tub gets here, i have a feeling that i won't be doing much work on the patio.

I'm going to make a few calls to price flagstone and brick pavers.  Good news is that I pressure washed the deck and I think i will keep the existing wood (probably saved $200 there).

TN, did you use any solutions on the wood, or just blast it with clear water? I know our main deck is "in need"..
Title: Re: took the plunge
Post by: anne on March 27, 2006, 10:24:27 pm
Flagstone, square foot for square foot, will likey be quite a bit less than pavers. Also depends on the look that you want. I was able to get some of the most expensive, attractive (to me) flagstone for a bit less than the most inexpensive, simple looking pavers. I liked the "organic" and irregular look of real stone.

I think it also depends where you go for the stonework....if you are near a quarry that's willing to sell to the public, you might be able to get flagstone (or similar) pretty cheap compared to the pricing at big box stores....(dumptruck load of smaller stone goes for a couple hundred, including delivery)

You should clean and wash the deck before you seal it.  The big box hardware stores carry a deck wash  solution.  Try to get a bio freindly one that wont harm your lawn or any furry woodland creatures.    Don't use bleach and don't let the solution stay on the deck for long periods.

If you have never used a Pressure washer...be careful,  go slow and steady, keep an eye on the nozzle angle,  and start in an  inconsipicious area.  A PW can tear up a deck like no one's business.

thanks, drew....I'm considering at LEAST washing the main deck, and I'll do as much on the tub deck before the delivery...I don't know if I'll have time to treat the wood, though.  :-/

T-Lady, My neighbor says Oxyclean makes a paste and it really does a number on the deck. She uses it every year and says it works without the need of a powerwasher. I am going to try it probably next week on my old decks

Boni, I just went to the Oxiclean website....I never knew they made different Oxicleans for different applications! Does she use just the basic stuff on her deck, or the outdoors stuff?
Title: Re: took the plunge
Post by: Bonibelle on March 28, 2006, 03:49:36 pm
She said it was a paste and that you shouldn't use the stuff you put in the laundry because you need really hot water to activate it. I will call and find out exactly what she uses. She did say she got it at Bed BAth and Beyond.  ;)

I pressure washed my deck, and it made a world of difference.  You do need to be careful to not gouge the wood.   I think we're going to paint the deck.

Outside the big box retail stores, I've had a pretty difficult time finding materials for building my patio (pea gravel, sand, flagstone and pavers).

TN, check around your area for a quarry....if you only need a "little" (1-ton trailer load), you'll have to check if they can load personal vehicles like that....if you need a "regular load" (up to about 22 tons), they can deliver COD.  We do that up here, anyhow.....YMMV, but the prices can't be beat if it's available in your area.

I placed a few calls today and have some leads.  Plenty of rock quarries up here, so i'm sure i'll find something. Somehow I don't think I need 22 tons (of anything).
