Title: New tub!!
Post by: ssbraun on October 02, 2005, 02:08:16 am
I thought I would try to post a few pics of my new baby!!  The pergola is for the summer; the glass wall panels are for blocking the north wind during winter blizzards while still keeping the outdoor feel and view...they can be removed in summer if we like

Nice work. Some thought went into your installation. Did you design the enclosure yourself? Again, very nice.

Thank you for the compliments!  Yes, I came up with the pergola design based on a LOT of internet research...found a picture I loved and modified that design to fit the deck perimeter shape.  The wind barrier was an afterthought (experienced a very windy stormy weekend!).  The pergola was contracted out due to lack of spare time, but the glass walls were designed / built by my father and me.

Wow...I love your design.  We are in the beginning stages of our deck.  I would love to know how you constructed the glass walls.  We are building two 13x13 square decks connected by a 12x25 deck.  We were going to build a pergola over the hot-tub and do screening but I love the glass.  How do you remove the glass?  Is it safety glass or plexi-glass?

The glass wall panels are very simple, actually.  I used 66" x 36" tempered glass railing panels from the local home improvement store...$75 Cdn / panel.  The wood is all cedar using a standard 2 x 4 frame with the window rough opening about 3/8" larger than actual glass panel (both width and height).  The windows are held in place by 2 x 2's which we ripped in half on the table saw (again cedar).  Use a brad-nailer to fasten these pieces around the perimeter of the window opening (laying flat), then apply a strip of 3/8" open cell foam weather-strip around these pieces.  The glass gets placed in the opening against the foam, then 4 more pieces of 1 x 2 with foam pre-applied are set in place and nailed to "sandwich" the glass panels between with the foam against the glass.  5/4 x 6 cedar fence boards finish off the outside.  Hope this is clear enough...

Great Spa st up.

Trying to come up with some idea of enclosing my pool without spending $18,000.

Very nice, I'll be doing a pergola above the tub on my deck also. I really like the look. Great idea with the glass panels. Out of curiosity how far down in the deck did you sink the tub.

As for the cost, Bodyaches, the pergola cost $3200 Cdn including labor / materials; the glass walls came to $1000 for the materials.

Bob5820, the tub is approx. 16" below the deck leaving about 26" exposed; I find this height is reasonably easy to get in and out of, as the cool down seats (which make a nice step inside the tub) are close to the height of the deck.

Cheers!

Great idea, though I'd prefer a gallery sub forum. It would make it much easier to find pictures. There are allot of great examples on this board, it would be nice if they were easier to find

Very nice. I love the enclosure idea. :D I like that it still seems like you are outdoors. Our tub is on a deck away from the house and I have been wondering about those winter winds. This looks like a great idea. Enjoy!!!!!!!
