Please, have a licensed electrician wire your spa and do not use extension cords. Thank you.

In the first picture. . . . . . is that SOMEONE sitting on the green chair? OUCH

I'm not sure what caused the fires, cappykat. These are not HotSpring spas. I found these pics when I did a search for "hot tub fires". These were the only ones I found.
Improper wiring, poor quality materials, extension cords, lightning, any number of factors can cause a fire. It is a very rare occurence.

Boy those are scarey pictures. Thank goodness the tub was not inside thei homes. Hope it never happens to any of us .
-
Agreed. I sure wouldn't chance using an extension cord...of any kind!
One more reason for putting a hot-tub outside.
-
We dropped a tub off a couple of weeks ago.
Customer calls, tubs been working fine, except now there is no power.
"Have you tried resetting the breaker?"
"Yes, I also had my electrician check and the hot tub is getting power"
We go out. There is power making it to the tub....Red 122V, Black 122V, White 128V!
Trace it back to the switch box...white is not connected to pig tail. Some electirican you got there!
Upon further investigation, the house is running on fuse box, not breakers and....the swith outside has its wires running into the 30A oven plug in his kitchen..along with the oven.
I should call him and have him look at these pictures!

Well.....I feel very bad this happened but there is a silver lining ......It certainly puts an end the TP vs FF design as these FF HS are still holding hot water just look at the steam coming out of them .....very impressive

WOuld having a non ETL or UL listed spa be a fire hazzard?
Would swapping parts in and out (Blowers, pumps, and the such) be a fire hazzard?

5. Doc should remove this post.
6. Bill should remove this post if doc doesn't get to it first.

Do you have any information about the cause of any of the spa fires? Were they caused by improper wiring size, bad grounding, water shortage of electronics, pumps running dry and causing too much heat.
I am asking to try and determine the causes just to ensure we do not make the same mistakes as those unfortunate owners.
I do plan on having a licensed electrician install the wiring or at least do all the hookups even if I were to pull wiring, a coworker is an electrician and has offered to do this for me.

Buy an Identifiable brand from a reputable dealer and inquire about certifications like UL, ETL etc. The major brand manufacturers talked about and mentioned on this board are very large financial organizations that are not knowingly going to subject themselves to lawsuits because of faulty products.
On the other hand, there are those who would make unauthorized modifications, but I would consider them to be very few and far between, but yet possible.
Don't buy from the lowest bidder or a dealer that has "assembled" all of the parts to make a spa, excuse me, that would be a "custom spa".
These pictures are indicative of realities that do exist and that have indeed occured over the past 30 years. There is a national website that register all fires and the cause of fires and these pictures represent only a few of such occurences.
Most fires are caused by faulty equipment (heaters) that do not shut off, loose wire connections, aluminum wire (which is a no no), and faulty circuits. you can rest assured that ALL of the manufacturers along with UL, ETL and all other testing labratories are fully aware of the possibilities and are forever viligant and alert for them.
In the past, even notable names have had fire issues, but today's Hot Tubs are far removed from the chance of this occurring, but then, anything can be modified or incorrectly wired.
