I'm digging in clay, 4inches deep and then planned to compact slag for base for tub. but I have some soft spots in my 7'x7' hole (two , in oppisite corners). do I need to keep digging till I reach firm clay or will the slag set good enough?
any1 go this route for there tub please let me know how and how its holding up.
THanks

well, do I keep digging or what?

Slag should compact very tighly very much like stone dust. I know that my dealer did not recommend using stone dust as the fional layer. He recommended that if I went stone dust to cover with either concrete or patio stones. But that if I went patio stone to make very certain that it was very well copmpacted. So in answer to your firt question I would dig until reaching the clay.
Other than road base I never heard of slag being used in this way. innovative.

Hi,
I would dig to at least 8" uniformly, use 21 AA rock as the bottom most layer, figure 6" worth, and the rest Slag. Make sure that you are flat and use a tamping (thumping) device to pack everything down. I then put brick pavers and they look great and the whole pad is seriously flat. Best of luck!
