Title: Hot tub surface
Post by: Riley012 on May 15, 2015, 09:22:11 pm
I have this light sand paper scaly coating on my hot tub surface. Can anyone tell me what mite be causing this? You can rub most of it off with your hand, except at the water line where it is a little harder to get off. Thanks for any help

Proper water balance is a major key to preventing sugar scale from forming. What is your ph and alkalinity readings?

It's caused by the pH getting very high and the calcium coming out of suspension in the water. The sand paper feel is calcium sticking to the sides of the water. Whatever you do, don't drain the spa because it will harden and be very hard to remove. Best way to remove it is to get pH down and get the pH really low in the spa. That will soften it up and allow it to be wiped off with a little bit of scrubbing. Mr Clean Magic Erasers work well for removing the scale.

Baking soda will raise PH and alkalinity.

Go to a hot tub store and ask for PH reducer.
