Title: Sinking a tub into a deck
Post by: Tomshop on January 26, 2014, 02:23:11 pm
I want to sink a tub into a deck.  The deck is only 24" high so part of tub will stick out. Has anyone had this issue and what aesthetic solution have you used?  I am looking at Jacuzzi and am concerned about look of the part sticking out being part white and part faux wood.

I love the built it look. I hate working on tubs that are sunk in or in a vault. Leave plenty of room for service down the road with removable panels bridging no less than a 2' is tight 3' is better gap between the tub and the support structure of the deck. Use removable joist's around the tub with support pockets to the structure away from the tub that allow for removal of the joists. I got some pictures of the way I did it i'll dig em up and post.

I love the look of built-in flush.

However, entry to the tub seems like it would be awkward to me.

I think a height where you could sit on the edge of the tub and swing your legs in for entry makes sense.

My local repair guy told me that customers will too often build it in without leaving room for entrance for service.

So, semi-sunken with good clearance for service makes sense to me.

It _will_ have to be worked on, probably more than once. Give it ten or fifteen years and you are talking several times at least.

Service bills may be a lot higher than you expect if there is not ready access.

Entrance and exit. SS wrapped in rope. And you only wrap it because this is Minnesota.

A good eye would notice I lowered the two deck panels later on. Seems to me it made them easier to remove.
