Title: Have I got pink slime in a 1 month old tub?
Post by: ElGlasso on July 17, 2013, 01:15:14 pm
I've had our tub for just over a month and the other night, after having 4 new people in it the day before, this pink slime rose to the top and stuck to the sides of the tub and this little floating light we have.

I called the guys we bought the to tub off and they seemed to think it was probably from somebody who used the tub having some kind of cosmetics on.

Here's a photo...

Any one think that's the dreaded (bacterial) slime?

By the way, So far I've changed the filter and double shocked the tub - two sachets. The readings from a test strip are now normal, just a tocuh under on the PH but i've added some PH-up.

Haven't used the tub since seeing the slime by the way - or seen any slime since.

Cosmetics or some body lotion is my bet.

Looks better than the brown I usually hear about!

Do you use anti foam?

I did actually - shortly before it was used and the pink foam appeared.

I get a white scum, when I use antifoam.
From what I can gather, it binds all the non dissolved solids and oil together, which kills the foam, but eventually results in slime very similar to this.

I'm now experimenting with a little critter called "ScumBug".
Within 30 minutes, all my slime had gone, although, this did also involve a little manual intervention.
I'm going to guess that one of your guests had a red costume on, or maybe red hair dye, possibly even lipstick (lets hope they weren't all men then   :-*)

Hi Elglasso,

Has anyone been in your hot tub that may have recently visited the Caribbean recently? More specifically have they brought the swim wear into the hot tub? Pink Algae can be found in parts of the Caribbean and is extremely resilient.

I had a pool customer with pink algae that we eventually solved but needed to use a "pool purge" from natural chemistry with a lot of chlorine shock.

The people who were in my tub were all men - no fake tan as far as i know. No Caribbean visits either.

I've used the tub since after the double shock i gave it and got good readings since - the defoamer scum thing sounds probably right. Especially as I defoamed AND added clarifier at the same time at the weekend.

I think it's fine now.

Hello, i ran a test, i got first ran my jets without getting in and no problem. I then got in wearing trunks that definatly had no washing powders or anything in and I got the same situation - a dirty tide mark around the edge. That day I had sprayed on sun cream and deoderant and Im pretty sure thats the cause.
