I am wondering about the pros/cons of having a permanent awning over a hot tub. Most of the pictures I see don't have one. What are your thoughts?

You can't see the stars through an awning. :( Or feel the snow flakes tickeling your shoulders.

I'm a no gazebo/awning kind of hot tubber so IMO:
Cons: 1) Cost of the awning, 2) you lose the feel of it being open to the stars, 3) I'm not a fan of the look of most I've seen, especially as they age.
Pros: It keeps the sun off the cover.

I will add to what Spatech said and say whatever causes/helps you get more use out of the tub. I considered a retractable awning, I may do that yet.
By the way, welcome to the forum.

In sunny climates it sure makes your cover last longer.
Years longer.

At our house, we have an upper deck above roughly half of the hot tub. While this would look just weird to have a "half" gazebo, I can experience the pros and con's of the gazebo effect - especially in the rain and/or heavy snow it's helpful. I would say though, to save your money in a moneymarket account and just buy new covers. If there was a cost conscious way for us to ditch our deck to make more star-space on the hot tub I would. Besides, you could buy like 2-4 tub covers for the cost of one gazebo that will look crappy by the time your first cover does.

I agree, it also helps eliminate snow buildup in freezing climates...if you can find a quality retractable for a decent price you get the best of both worlds...help keep snow/ice and sun off it, but you can still retract it and see the stars/etc. at night
