Title: I may shut her down in Jan
Post by: benalexe on December 01, 2008, 08:30:11 pm
I am thinking of shutting the tub down in Jan for the worst winter months.   I hate to say it but I just don't use it that much. Don't get me wrong I totally love the tub.   It is so awesome. But, with  3 kids and a crazy lifestyle running around to boy scouts, basket ball and karate there is just not enough hours in the day.I am using the tub about once every 2 weeks.   That's it. Seems like a lot of $$ to keep the water hot at 101 when I only go in every two weeks.

Does anyone else shut it down in Jan.

Of course I need to do it in a day that is warmer let's say 45-55 degrees.

If anything, our tub usage picks up in the winter.  We live in Maryland (near DC), and to be honest our usage during the summer months is MUCH lower than during the winter.  I have been in the tub with the outside temperature in the low teens and it is wonderful.  When it gets much above the mid 70's we don't use the tub that often.

I guess that is the long way of saying "No, we keep our tub open in January".

I'm in eastern PA and concur with Bill75.  We had a dusting of snow overnight on Saturday.  It was great using the tub early Sunday morning.  Also last night the stars were out in full force along with glimpses of Venus and Jupiter.  Temps were in the low 30's, but the tub was 101 and couldn't have felt any better.

We're busy as well with our kids (ages 15 & 13) activities and our own.  However, we find the best way to end the day is with a relaxing night-time soak before bed.  Probably use it 4-5x per week and enjoy doing so a lot more during the colder months than during the summer.  So our tub will be open in January.  And Februrary.  And....  ;)

We take a dip almost every night during the winter, as long as it's not windy (sometimes tricky in Nebraska!)  No way my husband would talk me into shutting it down during the winter....

We definatey use our tub more in the winter but I'm in south Texas and don't have the snow or extreme cold that most others do.  8-)

Benalexe....see you are a good example of why it is not always
such a dumb idea to get a used tub first to see how much you will use it.
Instead of the small change you have in your tub you could have 10 grand
in it and now be coming to the conclusion you don't use it nearly as much as
you thought you would. I don't use my tub nearly as much as I thought I would
either but I still enjoy it.

Benny, the winter is the best time for tubbing. I would rather shut it down in the summer but it's up to you......

We use our tub more in the winter also, but if you are thinking on shutting it down, make sure you winterize it properly. It will take a couple of hours, or maybe be a company to come out and do it so you are protected.

I have two boys and we have a similar routine that does take a lot of time.  However, after they are FINALLY in bed (my 12 year old seems to think that midnight is his weekend bedtime due to his Mom being OK with it...aRGH!) but I digress.. After putting them down, you NEED the tub to relax in yourself late at night.

I decided to turn the heat down to 80 and put it in econ mode.   Also threw a bunch of dichlor in.

I was under the impression that economy mode should only be used in the warmer months.  Turning the heat down makes sense but I'm not sure about econ mode.

Benny, just watch your temp. I ran my Epic in economy mode all last winter with no problems. I set the filter cycles to occur just before our typical soak times so that the tub would be hot. Last winter was very mild in the east (compared to what we are seeing now). This year, I have bumped up to Standard mode because we were on vacation and I didn't want to chance the electric going out and the tub freezing up. I can also watch the tub temp from my house and monitor problems.  Just watch your temps Benny and if it looks like a big snow or ice storm is coming, I would push that temp up..just in case!! ;)

Oh Zep, you would love a white Christmas!!  We were in Florida last week. My son sang at Disney's Candlelight Procession. It was a narriated musical presentation of the biblical story of Christmas. It was beautiful and it really got us in the Christmas mood...But I have to say, the warm weather, palm trees and lack of snow made it feel like a major piece was missing. Guess it is because that is what we are used to, but the chill,  and the clean crisp look of new snow sure adds to that holiday feeling.  :)

Anyway, for you Zep, I will send the worst snowstorm Texas has had in years..just have to push that jet stream a bit west  ;) ;) Nothing like a snowy Christmas soak!!

I knew you were a good guy, Zep...If your ex-inlaws still love you..you must be really special!  Why not talk them into buying a tub...then they will love you for your good advice and you can have a snowy soak!! ;)  ;D

My ten day forecast actually says rain/snow and a low of 26 next week!!!!!  We were actually in the 80s within the past week, so I will believe it when I see it... I don't think its ever been below freezing since I've lived here but my kids are so excited by the possibility of seeing snow.
