Have you spoken to anyone at a local nuserary?  I don't think swarming bugs when I think hedges. You might get a few, but do you think there will be enough to be a concern?  I'd rather have the natural hedge, than a fence.

I grew up working for my BIL's nursery in my teen years. Evergreens may have some bugs but they are few and not the swarming type (there may be exceptions). I don't ever remember us having bug problems and I sold/watered/loaded/unloaded/planted shrubs for a few years in upstate NY where bugs were pelntyful othewise. Now if you're building a hedge out of flowering types of trees/bushes then that's another story of course.

Regardless, it looks like a nice system.  Do you know the cost? Did you install it?  If so, how does it handle wind?  

FWIW, I have the same lawnmower and outdoor shower, but a different wife.  I'm sure she has never used it, because it is hooked up to a cold faucet.

Yeah I like WHYNOT's idea of a a nice hedge as well....
but it might take a while to fill in and perform the duty
you want.

Not sure where you live, but swarming bugs around
a hedge would not be an issue here in Dallas.

Plus most of my soaking is done in the winter months
when there are no bugs.

I nice hedge would also add to a more natural
look and feel.....In my opinion people don't
work enough at creating an "environment"
around their tub to help create a certain mood
and feel....I think it really adds to the whole
experience having your tub in a relaxing zen-garden
or natural, peacful like setting instead of just sitting
on a concrete slab. And pretty much any setting
can be "dressed up" with landscaping unless the
tub is already part of a pool setting which is a
different topic.

If ya go with the Deckmate....keep in mind where the poles will be
when it's not in use and if you will have a cover-lifter and how the
poles might effect a cover-lifter placement.
 
The poles might look kind of weird when not in use...
I think I would go with really cool looking landscaping
and/or hedge.

OK, finally convinved to go with a cedar hedge rather than a fence. That being said, any reccomendations on how far away to plant from my cement slab? I don;t want to dig too close (ie inches away) for fear of loosening up the stones under the slab but also want it close enough to give me privacy and wind protection around the tub. See pics in posts above for tub layout. Also, am getting hedge that is already 6 feet high.

Finally got around to planting the cedars. Thanks to all for the great advice. I now realise how much nicer it is sitting in a tub facing cedars as opposed to a fence!
