mesh filters on intake

Over the years, my mesh filters that sit over the intakes have stretched and don't stay in place anymore.  In fact, they are normally in my filter bag.  Are they necessary or should I call Sundance and replace them.

I have a 2005 J335 in case that matters

On most spas they keep sand from entering the diverter valves and jets. The diverters are then hard turn with the pumps running.

They put them there for a reason. I'd order some new ones.
