Hot tub victim had alcohol in system

By Noah Brenner
December 29, 2006

A man found dead in the hot tub of a downtown hotel has been identified by friends
as Michael Anthony Lehn of Jackson.

Teton County Coroner Bob Campbell, who would not release Lehn’s name because family had not been identified, earlier in the week said the 56-year-old was found floating in a hot tub at the Elk Country Inn and was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy performed Wednesday in Jackson identified the unofficial cause of death as drowning. Autopsy results also point to alcohol as a contributing factor to the death. The cause of death will not become official until the completion of further tests in Cheyenne.

Lehn’s blood-alcohol level was found to be .32, according to Jackson police Sgt. Scott Terry. A blood alcohol level of .6 generally results in death. Anyone with a blood alcohol level of .08 or greater is considered legally drunk in Wyoming.

One empty beer container was found at the hot tub, Terry said.

“We believe most of the consumption took place elsewhere,” he said.

Campbell estimated the deceased, who was a guest at the hotel, had been in the hot tub for about an hour before being discovered by hotel staff.

Campbell said that going in a hot tub while drunk “will make you pass out[/b].”

Law enforcement has completed its investigation into the incident.

“There were no signs of foul play,” Terry said. “We believe this to be an accidental death.”

So, if you are going to drink and soak - tie a safety rope snugly around your neck.

Or just don't.

While I like to get a buzz on and soak as much as the next guy, I have to admit my eyes were opened to the dangers a few years ago.  I was in Breckenridge, CO (maybe 8000' altitude?) on a ski trip; had a few glasses of wine after skiing all day and jumped in the hot tub.  After about 10 minutes I could tell something was happening to me; I've been close to passing out before (like from standing in formation during my Air Force years for hours in the hot Florida sun) so I got out of the tub right away, barely able to stand.  The various factors (altitude, dehydration from skiing, alcohol, and the hot water) conspired to just about knock me out.  Had I been a bit more tipsy or not been aware of the indicators of an imminent blackout I'm pretty sure I'd have passed out right there in the tub.  Definitely not something to mess around with!

pg_rider...

wow thats quite a scary story.

after reading this and reading your story I am surprised this doesn't happen alot more because i was not really aware of the danger in drinking and sitting in a hot tub.

i suppose though it doesn't happen more because normally people drinking in a hot tub are with other people and when someone keels over the other people grab them before they drown.

This is why I find it very important to never drink alone in the tub, always invite your good looking neighbor lady and his husband if you have to.

There is a HUGE difference between enjoying a drink or two in the hot tub and having a blood alcohol level of .32 and getting in a hot tub.....

That photo about sums it up.  At that high of BAC, most people, except chronic alcoholics, would pass out.  For some, that amount of alcohol could be lethal.
That's the slippery slope of alcohol- your judgement goes right out the window, leading you to do really stupid things like drinking that much in the first place, or getting near a pool or spa, or driving.
I haul way too many people to detox.  In my opinion booze is as potentially dangerous as meth, crack, heroin, etc.......

Some individuals would have died just drinking that much- pass out and not wake up.
