Firefighters extinguish hot tub in Golden Gate
By Ryan Mills (Contact)

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

A delivery driver who smelled smoke coming from the back of his truck this morning unknowingly chose a great place to pull off the road  right next to a Golden Gate fire station.

At about 10:07 a.m. a man driving a flatbed Lowe’s delivery truck pulled off to the side of road on Golden Gate Parkway because he smelled smoke. When he got out to inspect the truck, he found that a hot tub he was delivering had caught on fire. Fortunately he had parked right between a Golden Gate fire station and a Collier County Sheriff’s Office substation, said Golden Gate fire spokesman Victor Hill.

“The place he turned off is the turn that the employees use or the deputies use to pull into the substation,” Hill said.

Hill said the Jacuzzi, which was in a cardboard box, was billowing smoke. One of the firefighters jumped on top of the truck and put the blaze out with a fire extinguisher, Hill said.

“We basically drenched the Jacuzzi,” he said.

The hot tub was damaged, but the other items on the truck were not, Hill said. The fire marshal couldn’t verify what caused the blaze.

“Somehow the cardboard caught on fire,” Hill said. “We’re not sure if its a stray cigarette that may have caused it.”

Spa and hot tub are synonimous terms. Using Jacuzzi as a word is called generic miss use of a brand name. For the sake of this story, Jacuzzi/Hot Tub/Spa are all synonimous. Pretty easy to figure out if you think about it. Jacuzzi hasn't sold hot tubs to the big box stores in over 5 years, Lowe's has never offered traditional barrell style hot tubs therefore all the terms being used in the story are merely being used as descriptive words.
If you like it and you want it BUY IT!

It had to be a Hot Springs (pun only barely intended)  Jim A has been warning us for years these things are death traps and now they are catching fire before they are installed!  ;)

I was thinking it was maybe a H***n spa- they are after all, so energy efficient that they need to be hooked up only to feedback the excess energy they create to the power grid.  I thought maybe the on switch on this spa was accidentally pressed, and the fire started because there was nowhere for all that extra power to go.
