First winter with hot tub--now pregnant!!

Well, where do I start...     Nevermind!  

I did do a bit of research and will avoid the hot tub for the rest of my very critical first trimester.  

 The embryo/fetus is not capable of sweating or cooling itself off, thus the mother needs to be careful not to have her body temp rise above 101, whether in a hot tub, hot bath, hot shower, hot sun, or while exercising.

Later this winter, I plan to keep the temp at 100 (monitoring it with a thermometer or two )and go in for 10 minutes at a time.  

That way I still get to enjoy a relaxing massage and that wonderful weightless feeling.  My weight bearing joints will get a much needed rest.

We too have this problem. Our Dr. said to stay out of the spa until 8 weeks AFTER the birth of our child. He said it is not only the hot water, but also the chemicals and the chance for bacteria growth in the water. Even if the water looks perfectly clean, it could carry lots of bad little things you wouldn't want to subject your unborn baby too.

So for us, my wife is following doctors orders.

My wife, Ol' Meanness, ignored the advice of the doctors and hot tubbed nearly every day at my insistence.  Our baby turned out dang near perfect.  Don't pay attention to the naysayers!

Since we're on the topic. I just had a vasectomy done two weeks ago, so I haven't been able to soak lately.

My balls are feeling better now, and I have my two week checkup with Doc tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be back in this weekend...

sled, I am going next Friday.  I am so freaked out.  I picture my balls floating in the tub from being so swollen.  Did your doctor tell you not to tub???

How much down time did you have.  I am going to a clinic called the gentle vasectomy clinic.  They do a no scaple technique, which apparently eliminates downtime.  I dont need stitches with this procedure.


PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, tell me that it didnt hurt.  I feel like I am going to be sick.

We didn't have a tub during either of my pregnancies.  I did however stop taking baths because I knew I took very hot ones and couldn't tell how hot they were.  I was scared to death of cooking my little baby.

I wouldn't be concerned of the germs in ones own tub as I would be of a public tub.  But thats just me...

For many pregnant women, sitting in a hot tub sounds like a great way to ease muscle aches related to pregnancy. It is important to use caution when choosing a hot tub for relaxation and pain relief. Hot tubs can cause hyperthermia, which is an abnormally high body temperature.

What is the concern with hot tubs during pregnancy?
According to the Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), a body temperature of 101º F and above can raise concerns during pregnancy. Some studies have shown an increased risk of birth defects in babies of women who had an increased body temperature during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that becoming overheated in a hot tub is not recommended during pregnancy. ACOG also recommends that pregnant women never let their core body temperature rise above 102.2º F.

Although the specific degree differs, both OTIS and ACOG attest to the concern related to hot tub use during pregnancy.

Hot tubs are often factory programmed to maintain a water temperature of approximately 104º F. It takes only 10-20 minutes in a hot tub to raise your body temperature to 102º F or higher. To maintain a steady temperature, water is circulated and re-circulated through the hot tub to pump out cold water and pump in hot water.

So, is a hot bath safer than using a hot tub?
A hot bath, which is not uncomfortable or scalding, is a safer way to relax. In a bath much of your upper body will remain out of the water, making you less likely to overheat. Additionally, the water in a bath begins to cool off, as opposed to a hot tub, further reducing any risk of overheating.

How to reduce the risk if you choose to use a hot tub:
Although the Association does not recommend using hot tubs during pregnancy, here are some steps you can take to reduce any risk:

Re-program your hot tub to maintain a lower temperature.
Limit time in a hot tub to 10 minutes or less.
Monitor the temperature of the water by dipping a thermometer in the hot tub.
Monitor your body temperature to avoid overheating.
Pay attention to warning signs such as becoming uncomfortable or if you stop sweating.

I read about that no scalpel procedure. My doc didn't do that. He did the old fashion way.

Here is a quick overview...

Nurse tells you to get naked from the waist down.
Nurse has you lay on table
Nurse cleans your frank and beans with soap and warm water.
Nurse then tapes your frank to your belly (so it's out of the way)
Nurse then takes a bic razor, shaves your beans(dry)
Doc comes in, sticks needle in one side of beans(vas), injects anesthetic.
Cuts a hole in your beans, then pulls out Vas(vein). Clamps two sides, then cuts Vas,
He then Cauterizes(I swear I saw smoke) each end, then stitches you back up.
Repeat for other side.

Then they stuff gauze around your entire package, then slips on a jock strap.

Go home, sit on couch with ice in your crotch for 2 days. Get up only to go to the bathroom, and eat.

My doc gave me perkasett(sp) for the pain. Which there really was no pain, only discomfort.
I had mine done on Friday, and was back at work on Monday morning..

Doc said to stay out of hot tub for 1 month (yeah right)..

My stitches/cuts are almost cleared up, so I’m probably going in this weekend.


Did it hurt.. Well no, it didn’t(only when he stuck the needle in)..

It was mostly just an uncomfortable/invasive procedure.
