Optical Illusion is driving me crazy!!!!!
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:12:44 am »
Why does my water look green in the daylight.  :-/  When I take a sample in a clear container into the house, it is perfectly clear. :)  I had some people over on the weekend and they made a comment about the green water before getting in.  Any suggestions or am I stuck if green looking water that is really clear?

I wonder if someone was using this
before they jumped in your tub?

No, it is not.  It is white with black and brown flakes.

Lagator, what's your free chlorine count?
When was the last time you shocked your tub?
Does the shell feel slick to the touch?

Sometimes a green haze is the beginning of an algae bloom.  You won't see it in a small sample, 'cause it starts on the walls of the tub.

Can you post a pic?  Click on my screen name to the left and take a look at the water in my pearl white tub.  More of a blue aqua tinge.  I am told this is the reflection of the sky.  Green could be a concern though...

You were also told the real reason ;).

Hey!  Maybe Lagator's tub is upside down and it's a reflection of the grass?

My bromine is right on. As is my pH, water hardness, etc.  I am starting to worry now, when you mention algae.  :( Could my readings be fine and still have algae?  What might cause it?  :-? I have only had my tub for a month.   I shock it twice a week.

I find that when I add my bromine the water goes green, as the chemicals dissipate it goes back to light blue. You might be using too much bromine. If you have an ozonator, you level should only need to be 1-2 ppm

Don't stress, Lagator.  I only asked because when I first got my pool, I had an algae issue before I figured out the ropes of water chemistry. If your sanitizer levels are good, there's almost no chance of algae.  Sounds like you're doing everything right.

Hey, Brookenstein, I like your rack!
(Towel rack, that is!)  Must make myself one of those...  It's a good idea.

Next time you change the water be sure to clean the tub thoroughly, use swirl away or what ever it is that helps clear the pipes, scrub the surface well, rinse several times and then fill it back up. If the green tinge is there immediately after fill up then you likely have nothing to worry about (might buy a new hose to fill with to be even more cautious). Or watch and see if you note a color change after adding bromine for the first time.

Either that or you might want to stop drinking that water!

If the green tinge ISN'T there, well then you may have a problem...
 ;)
Perhaps something in your water naturally has shifted the index of refraction of the water causing a more green wavelength to be scattered and absorbing more of the blue wavelength. The wavelengths of those two colors are close to one another afterall (ROYGBIV). I don't use bromine so perhaps that is a factor as cooltoy mentioned?

My tub is off white with grey and brown flakes in the material as well but tends to have the more typical aqua blue color to it, even when fresh.

My bromine is right on.

That's what I was looking for. I always see a light green tint to Bromine. Then again, I don't seee too many bromine spas since we're not too big on it and steer people more toward N2/dichlor so I can't say exactly why bromine tends to have that light shading of green.

That looks like my water. :o    The color of your tub is also very similiar.  Do you use bromine as well?

We have a lot of metal in our water.  Turns green if I don't use "metal gone" before adding dichlor.  Had the same problem with the pool.

The place where I sometimes buy chemicals was having a problem with their water looking the same as the water in Brookensteins photo.  They weren't sure what it was, but lots of people in the town were having the issue.  All readings were right on the money, so it must have been something with the water supply.
