Recommended slope for run off
« on: July 13, 2006, 11:13:14 am »
I remember seeing a thread that gave the recommended slope on a patio/deck for water run off, that will not adversely effect the water level in a spa.  It seems like it was 1/4" per foot.  I did a search but it won't take a slash (/).

Does 1/4" per foot sound right?

Sorry if this is a constantly asked question.

That degree of slope will cause your spa to be off by about 2", more or less, depending on the footprint of your spa.  our Optima is pretty close to 8'X8'.
Not sure I'd want that much tilt- I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything, I just prefer my spa to be as level as possible.

People with spas this far out of level often ask about shimming.

Just food for thought.

I agree, that's far more than you need and you'd hate to have that much slope in the spa. I'd say 1/8" per foot max but I'd personally go 1/16" per foot to limit the uneven waterline.

I checked mine with a level when the cement guy was done (I wasn't around)  but it looks real darn flat.  I don't live in a swamp and standing water anywhere is a rarity.

Does there need to be any slope if you're just covering it with the hot tub?

I can see the importance of having some slope for a "real" patio, but I wouldn't think it would be all too important for a hot tub (unless it's right against the house).

How wrong is my logic?

How much bigger is the concrete pad than the spa base?

If it's a couple feet or more beyond the base, water could pool along the high side.

If the concrete is only slightly bigger than the base of the spa, which is how ours is, then I'd go for a level pad.

At present the pad will have about a 3' walkway around the spa.  The reason I even asked about a slope is that I don't know what a spas 'bottom' is made of.  Pressure treated wood, untreated pine (I sort of doubt that), stainless steel.  My concern is possible rotting of the undercarriage of the spa if water accumulates.
I am sure spa companies have taken this into consideration, since it is a water filled vessel, but I like to know things.
We are debating whether to go with a wood deck or concrete slab.  Any input on that would be helpful, too.
