I have been having a bit of a rough time. Went Friday to my doc to see about a lump under my right arm. Very painful, couldn't work or sleep. To keep this from becoming a novel: I spent five days in the hospital, had a brush with 'flesh eating virus' and am now home, learning to live with Diabetes.

Chas,

I wish you a speedy recovery.

My 9 year old daughter is a Type 1 diabetic. I know the disease all too well. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Wow.  How scary for you Chas.  Was the lump/flesh eating thing related to the diabetes or did they find out about the diabetes when you were in the hospital?  Hope you are feeling better.

I just did a bit of reading up on Flesh eating bacteria. Chas, that's nasty stuff.

Once again chas, I sincerly hope they took care of it and everythng is ok.

Brook, from what I read, Flesh eating bacteria isf necrotizing fasciitis is Streptococcus A, better known as  "strep throat.

The artilce I read, said this is what Jim Henson (Muppets) died from.

Yes - diabetics can't throw off infection as easily as non-diabetics. So what started as a minor infection got into the fatty tissue in my arm and went nuts. They told me that fatty tissue has virtually NO blood circulation, so antibiotics would not get to the worst spots. So, they just cut it out. They left it open for three days, and then went back in Monday to see if they got it all. I still have a little pipe sticking out - gives me a new affinity for spas.

I had heard that antibiotics don't kill viruses anyway, so I'm not sure I understand it all.

But the discovery that I am dibetic was a good news/bad news thing: Now they know why the lump went bad on me, but of course, I now have to only eat food I don't like.
;)

Thanks to one and all for your kind words, wishes and prayers. I had my son bring me a laptop, but we could not find access - believe me, I would have loved to stay in touch!

Antibiotics kill bacteria.

It's bad news that you have diabetes.  It's good news that you found out.

Better you know so you can correctly manage the condition than letting it go unmanaged and ending up worse off.

Good luck to you.

Chas,

My gramps is diabetic and got staph infection after a triple bipas.  He lost his entire sternam due to the infection and spent 6 months in the hospital hooked up to anitbiotics to get rid of the of the infection.  The diabetes definately played a factor.  They also left him wide open for a couple weeks to heal from the outside in.

Changing your diet will suck initially, but you'll get used to it quickly and it will save your life... so it will be more than worth it.
