War of the Worlds
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:50:30 am »
Saw it last night. Loved it, very intense.  Of course the original from I think it was 57 is one of my favorite movies.  Speilberg pretty much made a brand new movie, but kept a few points from the original. That was obviously intentional, but well done.

I looked forward to this movie, and am looking forward to The Fantastic Four as it was my favorite comic book.  Many people have noted the lack of original ideas in movies this year, but I could see the logic of making a new high tech movie of a Sci Fi classic, but I think what really disturbed me was the preview for the new Bad News Bears.  Why?  It is so obviously a rip off of the original, which you can rent. Technology in little leaque hasn't advanced so far that this needs to be retold.  Substitute Billy Bob for Walter Matthew, some new up and coming actress for Jody Foster and its the exact same story being retold.  It looks like a must miss.

I know what you mean, I try to separate what those spoiled Hollywood brats do off screen with their characters on screen, else I wouldn't watch too many movies.

I too am very eager to see both of those movies (not BNB).

As a kid I loved listening to a 2 record version of the War of the Worlds.

Dad mixed into a spooky Halloween tape he played for the trick or treaters too.

Cruise is capable of acting civil.

I'd say "J" is more like L. Ron Hubbard and Tom Cruise is more like one of J's customers.

My kid (14 y.o.) saw it last night as the wife and I finally got to see Star Wars, he loved it!

I explained to him that it was originally a radio script and people freaked out and shot everything in site. Of course being from NJ (originally a NYer), I couldn't remember what town supposedly the martians landed in. I told him Grovers Mills!

I also told him that a movie was made in the 50's and another in the 70's (?) but the 70's was about the actual radio script and the chaos it caused.

The I asked him if he saw "Independence Day" and he and his friend said "NO". I didn't want to give away the ending for him if he ever sees it.

Thank goodness for the common cold! ;)
