"Gunky" just above water line

All the levels read perfect, yet just above the water line, there is this brown looking gunk. It wipes off with little effort, but I would like to know what it is.

I noticed it yerterday and added an enyyme to eat it up, but now I wonder if it is something other than body oils.

Its make- up,  lotion,  soap scum.  If you wipe it off right away it should come off pretty easy.  Tell the women to either take a shower before tubbing or use less body products prior to getting in

That's what I kinda thought too.

The tub is white, so it stands out where in a colored spa it wouldn't.

I've seen it only after visitors have used my tub. I've alwasy thought  it  was Makeup, and oils.   It's a nasty scum.

I use a Mr Clean magic eraser to wipe it down,

Don't forget to wipe behind the pilliows and into the filter area.

If you've got this stuff, chances are your filters could use a wash as well.

Great advice. I'll look into cleaning the filters for sure.

I am glad i got a white tub, because I bet alot of people have this but can't see it on a colored tub.

It ain't pretty that's for sure.

Have you been using clarifier and shock together?  That combination will create some nasty brown sludge.

Nope, I've not used any clarifier that I know of. I have used an enzyme that is suppose to elminate body oils/etc.

I never used an enzyme and am a bit unsure how they work as opposed to a clarifier. Whats the deal?

Is it possible that the scum is the desired result of the enyzme? (cologulate the oils  and gunk so it can be trapped in the filter or wiped up?  ? ? )

That is exactly what the enzyme is suppose to do. It gathers the oils and turns them into larger particles that the filter can then trap.

Untreated, the oils just pass through the filter.

So is  the scum line is the result of the enzyme colagulating the oils and then settleing on the water line,  or you used the enzme to  remove the scum?  I'm confused.

The enzyme is used to remove the the oils. But I think the key is to place the enzyme in the spa while it is in the cleaning cycle. I placed it in and ran the jets full speed. What then happened is the water line raised due to the jets running and when it went into cleaning mode, the gunk was left on the sides to dry.

Enzymes "eat" oils and soaps.  Clarifiers coagulate particles too small to filter into larger particles that will filter.  Enzymes will clean your filter.  You will have to clean your filter after using clarifiers.  My experience has been that enzymes are a good preventative maintenance product and clarifiers work when you can't clear your water.
