High PH but low Alk
« on: November 12, 2005, 01:15:14 pm »
Hope someone can help. I have a PH of 7.8 but my alk is 30-40.  Is there any way to increase alk but not increase ph at the same time.
Thanks.

Yup!  Adding household baking soda will raise TA while affecting ph very little :)  I used the following calculator for my spa and it worked great.  Enter spa capacity in 1000 litre units ie "1.7" , 000 litres in calculator for 1700 litre spa.
good luck!

Just get your T.A. in a good place first - then worry about your ph. The T.A. is your waters ability to resist ph change. Once that's good your ph should be easier to maintain.

ssbraun, thanks for that link.  I've added to my favorites and I'll definitely use in the future.

Wow, I never knew about that calculation.  When my alk is low, I run the pump and sprinkle baking soda on top with no regard to measurements and stop when the whim hits me.  It's amazing my levels keep turning up perfect at my monthly tests at the pool supply store as well as on the test strips. ::)

Thanks for the insight...that's what I do too, but not all here have your great wisdom and finesse, especially those that are new to this...hence the original question.

;DI knew about the wisdom, but thanks for tossing in the finesse part.  I always thought I was a little clumsy, especially in social settings!!!

Considering that this is something of a social setting, you may be right after all ;) ;D  ... but we digress!!
