Spa Weight.....

I've read that a spa weighs approx 2000 lbs with water.

On what surface is it better to put it?
would a interlock patio be strong enough for it?
will the patio "work" over the years?

An interlock patio should be fine, provided there is adequate screening/crucshed gravel below.

Mist tubs weigh more than 2000lbs with water..more like 3000-4500.

there is approx 10 inches of very compact dust underneath the patio...

my dilema is the following:

to place the tub closer to the house on the patio (more private, less wind, less convenient, etc. but takes alot of the patio room)

or

to place it on the grass about 5-6 meters from the house (more space, but less privacy, open wind area, etc.)

Keep in mind that I live in Canada, and in winter it can go to -30 .....

Some of them can weigh up to 6,000 lbs, depending on the size of the spa.

Actual dead weight (lbs/square foot) usually varies between 90-115 lbs/sq. ft., again, depending on size of the spa.

The bigger the spa, the more limited your options become as far as spa placement.  Your dealer should have a Pre-Delivery Guide that has all pertinent information to help in your decision making process.

And also dont forget to add the weight of the people into the equation when calculating your spa weight.  

As far as placement, I would say with your cold winters get it as close to the door as possible!!!...Mine is one step on the deck then one step on the spa step then   aaaaahhhh.....LOL....

So it's either on the patio or 30 feet away?

No other option? No other door? Keep in mind you can always landscape, or put up privacy screens or maybe even add on to the patio?

Since winter time soaking is my favorite  (live in N.E). I put mine as close to the door as possible.  I don't want to shovel any more than needed, and as Perk said, take a step and in your in.  ahhhhhh.

Someone has to clear the snow on the way to the tub...in the end if the tub is farther from the house, you are less likely to use it IMHO.

One of the most beautiful installs I saw was at the back of the yard, beyond the pool, up a little hill. There was a nice gazebo over it. It looked smashing....but no one used it in the winter.

the problem is the landscaping - patio was built before we thought of buying a spa.....so now we must work around it....

we're thinking of putting it close to the house, but my husband thinks it may affect the foundation of the house, cuz of the weight ....

Unless the surface you set the spa upon is somehow tied to the house, it shouldn't impact your houses foundation.  I'd be suprised if that was the case.

Water weighs in at a little over  8.3 pounds a gallon, so for a 500 gallon tub your looking at 4172 lbs in water alone. The spec sheet for my tub shows the filled weight at 5175 lbs and the empty at 968 lbs.
