Icy Deck.....What's good to use?
« on: January 14, 2005, 07:51:27 pm »
We just got our hot tub and here in Ohio it's really cold.  My kids have a problem splashing each other and when the water sits on my deck next to the tub ice forms making it extremely slippery.  What do you use next to your hot tub to ensure folks don't slip?  I'm thinking of using some indoor/outdoor carpet but didn't know if there is anything better.  I know the reasonable answer is making the kids stop splashing but I can't be around every second.  Any direction is very appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your response.

Hello fellow Buckeye!

My answer, wait 5 minutes, the weather will change ;)
We just wear hi traction, low cost sandals in and out of the tub.

We use what's called an "Ice Mat" and it works amazingly. It's about 15' x 2.5', 1/4" think and appears to be made out of coconut fiber or some other organic material. I wish I could tell you where to get it but it was a gift - I'd like to have a couple more...

If my kids want to splash and jump around and raise hell we go to a motel pool. My tub is for relaxing, and conversation.

We have an unheated three season porch that we go through to get to the tub. We keep out baseball hats for rain and I have two indoor/outdoor rugs that I can take out and use to make a path to the tub for guests without sandals. ( used recently by 4 teenagers celebrating the end of a school project in sleet the other day....) But we have a rag type rug that we can take in and out to go over the stairs to prevent ice build up. After we are done in the tub, all the rugs come back onto the porch, where they eventually thaw. Very low tech, but works!

Ggetting out of the tub means that we drip water onto the deck and well, it's virtually impossible not to get ice next to the tub here becuase IT'S TO COLD OK!

I have a 5' X 4' carpet that I drop onto the ice and take in after.  ;D

We bought something similar for our father in law who is getting a bit too old to scrape his front walk (and lives too far away to drive up and have us do it).  Here is one web site for the mat, but I don't know if it is what you are using:

This item looks to be the same but is less expensive.  I think it is $9.99 where the other is $24.95.  Not sure but you can check it out.

I must have hit POST Twice.  Oh, last night on Who wants to be a millionaire, the $25,000 question was, This state's residents call themselves Buckeyes. The answer was Michigan (ewww) Ohio, WVA or Wisconsin.

Actually, I think it was a glitch or something, because right after I posted that, I ended up with duplicate posts on another thread!  I'm surprised you didn't catch it!
