Sleep Study

I'm about to undergo a Sleep study by some medical sleep specialists.   In reading through sleep disorders, hot tubs are actually recomended as an aid to insomnia. However, they are not recommended as a treatment for narcolepsy despite the claims of #####spas

A nice late evening soak always knocks me right out as soon as my head hits the bed pillow.

I remember someone in the medical know explaining how a drop in body temperature is one of the triggers for falling asleep.  I think they were suggesting that the temp drop after a soak would reinforce this concept....sounds plausible to me.....especially after a couple of Drewski's famous Liquid Cocaine Shots! ;D

Sometimes I sleep really well after a soak - and other times I am totally wide awake.  I haven't figured out what the difference is yet!

I have too heard about the raise in core temp, and than the corresponding drop after getting out being the catalyst to nodding off quickly.

Well I can get different results from different soaks.

A long soak at high temps, which for me means 101 or 102, and I sleep like a grownup.

A shorter soak at 101 or below and I am envigorated, and can work all night - and often do.

Try different settings and lengths to find what works best for you.

Hmmm...Wmccall, why do they say it isn't good for narcolepsy?  Do they mention cataplexy?

Reason being, my Dad has been diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy both (he also has that restless leg syndrome you suffer from).  He is actually the record holder at the sleep clinic here, he can go to rem in 8 seconds!  No wonder he was never any good at bull riding!  Anyway, I would like to find a small tub for my parents, my Mom has RA and fibromyalgia, which I know it would help her (she loves my tub, just doesn't live quite close enough)!

I was just curious, because I figured I could tell him the benefits for the restless leg.  But if it is not good for narcolepsy, well...there is no point in him getting in.  I don't know if he would wake up if he went under the water!  LOL!  When I was 9-10 my sister used to make me steal cigarettes from my Dad's front shirt pocket.  He really could sleep through a tornado!  At least he is medicated these days!  When he lived on Staten Island, he fell asleep on the Verazzono (sp?) Narrows Bridge and woke up with the engine of the truck sitting next to him!  Oh...the horror stories I could tell!!!

I gotta shut up!  Anyway, this is very interesting.

I read somewhere that you should complete your soak 40 minutes before you go to bed. Sounds consistent with the drop in temp making you sleepy.

With regard to Narcolepsy I was mainly joking, I could imagine someone falling asleep and drowning. It would clearly be the hot tub manufacturers fault resulting in a huge lawsuit.

Well, yes, I can see my Dad doing that!  It is really difficult to wake him up, and sometimes he may seem awake, but he isn't!  It is really quite strange.  He didn't believe he had a problem for many years.  The 5th government vehicle he totaled finally made him realize.  Plus, he had to crawl out a back window to exit the car, then it rolled on over.  If he had been in there, it could have killed him.  But then again, he went off the side of a mountain one time and landed in a tree, they said he was so relaxed because he was asleep, that it prevented him from being hurt.

Those are just a couple of the stories I have.  At least no one else was in the car with him.

You know the joke:

I want to die, like my grandfather, peacefully in my sleep instead of screaming like the rest of the passengers in the car.

I can totally relate with my Dad!!!  He is finally medicated, which is a miracle!  I'm just glad they have medication now!

That seems a common trait of sleep disorders, or so I'm learning from my reading.  The symptoms got me interested, but it was Gina, that keeps saying, "This is you"

I got home late from curling last night so I didn't use the tub, big mistake.  Carrying a couple dozen stones around that weigh 43 pounds can make you sore.
