Favorite Hot Tub Beers
« on: September 30, 2004, 08:27:14 pm »
On weekends I sometimes (most times) have a beer while sitting in the tub. Over the years I have become partial to a couple, Sam Adams and Fat Tire. I have also noticed that the heavier stouts like Guiness, although great, don't seem to do well (for me) when soaking.

I am interested in breaking out of my beer rut and I am wondering what beers others have tried and liked or disliked.

Too bad you live south of the 49th, the good beer is up here in Canada.

I enjoy an Alexander Keiths while tubbing

Also in the short list:

Sleeman Honey Brown
Carlsberg (ya I know you get that down south but it is brewed differently here)

Lately I have been enjoying the "Honey Brown's"--very smooth. It does not seem to matter from which brewery. They each have their own qualities.

Before that northern European beers-German, Netherlands, etc.

When we go out, quite often I try various offerings from the micro-breweries. They can be very good.

Hmmmmmm,
Nothing better than a good, cold Liberty ale! It's made by Anchor Steam, has a dark gold color and great taste. Not too heavy, but plenty of ethanol. A bit on the pricey side at $9 a six pack, but well worth it.
Number 2 beer would be Bass ale followed by Miller Genuine Draft........

Sleeman Honey Brown

Ahh... Sleeman...

That's one of the bigger things I miss since we've moved from Canada to the US...  Tim Hortons is probably still tops on that 'miss list'.

Bulmer;

Hockey will be moving up the list too. As you know we have alot more junior hockey here and there will be a higher likelihood of TV coverage for non-NHL hockey here.....

I surmise (a word I have never used) that because the environment in the tub is hot that a colder brew is best (for me) and generally the darker the brew the warmer (relative) it is suppose to be served (drank in my case).

Sleeman Honey Brown, I will have to be on the look out. Here are some more of my hits and misses.

Hit list:
Dogfish Head Au Courant

Miss List:
Young's Double Chocolate Stout (don't know what I was thinking)
Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen
Chimay Ale Peres Trappistes
New Bulguim Abbey (This is suppose to be the best from this brewery, but Fat Tire is still my choice.)

Being the Brewman and all, I have to jump in on this.
I appreciate all beers, except I'm not too partial to the outrageously light ones.
Regular premium mainstream lagers- Budmillercoors, are plenty light enought for me.
My favorite beers are the ones I make, and those run from Octoberfest type lagers to Barley Wines, and Imperial Stouts.  Those make good winter sipping beer in front of the fire with a nice cigar, or in the spa.
Making really light beer is actually more difficult than making the heartier more flavorful beer.
I have a 4 tap draft system setup in my rec room, and currently have an Octoberfest and a Scotch Ale on tap, as well as some really good premium quality root beer.
For commercial beer, I like anything Summit Brewing makes, I also like Goose Island's offerings, as well as some of the more off the wall types like Chimays, which are definately an aquired taste.  I'll take a properly poured glass of Guiness stout any day.
Their nitrogen packed stout is pretty good, as well.
The only commercial beer I didn't care for was Sam Adams Tripple Bock.

As a New Hartford, New York native I've had that beer just a few times. Though it wasn't on the top of my list there was the time the Matt kid that I went to school with had a graduation party at his house and they actually rolled in a beer truck and it was all you could drink. Ahh, how life was different back then.
